It's also bullshit. Uh-huh-huh-huh aside, the motor might be rated to 400A x 250V but they're not using that. Or if they are, it's all going on squealing and raping the rubber.

Electric delivers torque. Power is a different consideration. I don't consider it proven on the basis of that video.

No different to the quoted power/torque figure for any bike though is it? They (manufacturers) only quote peak values for wow factor, not really useful stuff that you actually need.

Which it is.
They say '400a on the motor' which would suggest to me a 400a controller. That's of course not the motor output, which will be a bit less (some of those hp will be heat).

There's nothing particularly difficult in what they've done - bar getting it on the kart, the rest can be done with off the shelf components.

The problem is that if you want to drive it for any period of time it's going to be very expensive, heavy or likely both.

More interesting would be if they used some of that power for a fan for downforce and used it for drag racing or hill climbs Smile

Like it or lump it leccy power IS the/our future.

IC engines are almost ready for museum use only (in evolutionary terms).

IOM Leccy bikes were sneered at but no one is laughing as much now.

Yes, they will be the future, but they won't be the present until we have energy storage that's:

High density or very fast charge and with a DC grid and big local energy storage points at 'filling stations'.
and
Light, i.e. not lead based.
and
Cheap, i.e. made of common, easily worked materials.

We can currently manage at most two out of three. That doesn't mean that we're 2/3rds of the way there.

Yamaha's PES-1/PED-1 project seems to have gone a bit quiet, pun intended.

I was looking a Tesla technology it's very expensive at present but that is normally managed by mass production ChingChong-isation.

Leccy is the future? Sounds like a luddite view - none of these new-fangled 'internal combustion' here - lets stick to the tried and proven electric technology.
(What with electric cars having been around some time before ICE ones.)

In evloutionary terms, there's not a massive difference between an electric motor back before the ICE days - I'd say that ICE has come on massively and still has a lot more to do so.
Electric motors don't have a massive amount to advance - the controllers and so on do and most importantly the storage technology.

It's unlikely transfer issues will be solved any time soon - a while ago I worked out the power requirements to recharge an electric bike in the same time an 'ICE' bike's power can be 'recharged'.
We are talking a small powerstation working flat out to charge just one bike in the same period.
The expensive bit in Tesla cars - the batteries - already IS mass produced in China.

I don't think it's a case of 'time'. I think it's a case of people not trying to expect a different but useful product to be useful in the same ways as an existing one. There's some really good use-cases for electric vehicles, but so far they're mostly being ignored for trying to replicate ICE vehicle capabilities whatever the cost.

Don't forget we have no massive reserves of fossil fuel to pump through IC engines. The significant mother-loads have been found or are in predictable places and more or less accounted for.

Yes the real stumbling block is storage of energy.
But as you stated the Chinese are already helping to reduce the cost of small batteries.
Horse power was quickly smitten by coal power and then petrol banished coal power very soon after.
Petrol power hasn't been around for as long as steam was and horses were around for donkey's years before steam.
So evolutionarily speaking the internal combustion engine may already be on borrowed time. The cost of the fuel will kill it not just the availability of alternative/renewables.
Electronics already dominate in the design of today's bikes so finding a working energy source is possibly more of a hop than a jump.

Currently over 3/4 of the electricity we generate in the UK comes from fossil fuels.

The perecentage of electricty generated by 'renewable' sources seems to be exactly the same as the percentage of pump-diesel which comes from renewable sources - both are at 7%.

The difference making up electricity is nuclear power, of course... all existing plants I believe have ten years or less life left.

Storage of energy can take many forms. One is to make an 'artificial' fuel which can be used in internal combustion engines, as has worked well in Brazil for some time, never mind those running their vans from the back of a chippy.

The electronics in bikes and finding a decent electrical-energy storage medium are massively different. The former is very specific to motorcycles and often is technology that has been found in cars for many years. The latter is a problem which spans many industries that is a lot more complex, has a lot of people working on it, but no obvious solutions that are THAT close.

By that logic it's probably all a moot point because we'll be using personal teleporters soon anyway.

105 years ago 'A trip to mars' imagined a bit more than the moon.

Even if we had amazing battery technology, teleporters are more likely than us being able to solve the energy transfer issues to get a full tank at the same speed as an ICE vehicle can.

Unless you go with fuel cells.
In which case, might as well go ICE anyway, which is, for the moment considerably better at releasing the energy.

We're already importing about 5% of our electricity from France, but their needs are growing and they export to other countries too.

If you want everyone to also be using electricity for vehicles, you've got a lot more demand.

If we go back to 'changing the way we approach the issue' - light weight bikes that don't go that fast with low power requirements used for short regular journeys - it's not a big thing as they can be charged using relatively low power and overnight when power demands are low.

Replacing a current car or motorcycle in all forms isn't going to work so well, however.

The coal plants that we're going to have to build anyway because we've dicked around for too long on replacing our nuke plants and funding 'renewables' scams, and now don't really have any other option.
