When obtaining bike insurance quotes what do you say when asked this question? It seems self-defeating to me, but hey. I'm both cynical and mean. Oh and somewhat ignorant of bureaucratic bullshit surrounding small - and a lot of large - print around policies.

E.g. the answer "My bike is worth two thousand ponds and I would like to include a voluntary excess of two thousand ponds please" seems erm well, wrong. Why would you say you'd like to include any excess? I don't get it. Could you bring your quote right down, and then take the gamble that you would never claim?

yeh, it can lower a quote as you're less likely to claim for a small bump or dropping the bike and scraping it a bit and replacing a mirror as it's less than the excess

it makes naff all difference to me now I'm 30+ and been riding 3 years on an aging ZZR

I always say no, car or bike.

It doesn't seem to matter how much voluntary excess I put on when playing with their quote machines, it never makes more than a couple of quid difference. Seems pointless, I want to pay as little as possible if anything happens and there's always a compulsory excess anyway.

I agree with ScaredyCat - I've tried messing with the voluntary excess to bring down the overall insurance costs, but the effects are negligible, even up to £750, which is on top of the mandatory excess anyway.

I had a gander at the small print on one of my renewal quotes. Additional excess if bike is stolen from within 500 meters of my house 500 ponds, compulsory excess 100 ponds, voluntary excess 100 ponds. So in a worst case scenario I am down 700 ponds and have no bike. Thumbs Down

On a policy on which I never intend to claim for fire/theft, either £0 or £max iff it saves more than a few £££.

On a policy on which I might claim (only the Nazi Tractor so far), £0.

Say no. Get quote.

Amend to £100 voluntary. Get quote.

Make your own judgement, bearing in mind involuntary excess's. Thumbs Up

What he says. You weigh it up and decide if you want cheaper insurance vs getting paid out less in a claim.

My insurance is like £100 a year.... it's not going to save me much really, is it?
Daughter's, likely to be £500+ when I have to get it before her CBT in a few months.. possibly.

Yes adding £250 voluntary excess has lowered my premium with £100 per year.

Always said no so far due to it making barely any difference. Pretty much assume its pointless to even consider; although I do keep checking how it works out adding it on every year regardless.

But then.

Assuming it was the cheapest quote already - I would go for that too, personally.

Makes very little difference to mine. There again, neither does pillion, mileage or security.

Maybe because I'm an old fart.
