I'm 28 and have just bought a Yamaha RXS 100 from the early 1980's and every time I ride shit goes wrong or bad!
If I list what's happened and anyone just jump in and share advice of what I should have done or should be doing in said problem, if that's ok?
First problem is the Baffle, the guy that had the bike before me has royally fucked up the bolt hole that holds the baffle in place, so now the bolts seem to rattle off (I found this out while riding in the Blackwall Tunnel) my question is: I stopped, pulled over mid tunnel and ran back to get the baffle that popped out, should I have done this? will I get in trouble?
Second problem is the bike randomly cutting out, once at speed (doing about 50mph on the A20) I pulled the clutch and coasted to the slip road. The bike wouldn't kick start at all after that so I bump started and now she seems fine up til today where she just cut out at a roundabout, again kick starting wouldnt work so I had to bump it... What could cause this?
Third I was filtering today and kinda smashed into a wing mirror (I don't think it broke but it made a loud sound) I carried on riding but I feel so guilty, should I have stopped to say something?
and lastly about 40 cars past the wing mirror fiasco, I filtered into a tight gap right next to a van (on the passenger side) and as i've gone to pull out in front of him, he hasn't seen me and dragged my foot under his wheel at the same time I accelerated so I kinda got dragged round to the front of the van but I just carried on going after that.. Was I at fault for being where I was? ( I know it's hard to tell from me just saying)
Also the bike slipped away from under me in the rain on a roundabout, (I know where I went wrong here)
Thanks for taking the time to read this, I'm sorry there is a lot, I just ain't got many friends with bikes that I can ask these things to!
(Also I've got 90% of this on GoPro I just haven't got around to editing it yet)

Ahh thanks! I'm not really a vlogger, I don't talk at all while on the bike, I'm too busy trying not to die!! I just film just for the footage if anything goes wrong (kinda like a dash cam) and the one video I have edited together is unlisted on youtube so only friends I give the link can see it.
Not really down for the whole "watch me ride from work to home while I moan" and vice versa.

Everything rattles off of an RXS.. I have had indicators, numberplates and rear wheel adjusters fall.. Liberal use of M6 self locking nuts is your answer here... As for the Blackwall tunnel, i think there is now a fixed penalty for breaking down in it.. you may be OK if you started up again tho..

Strip and clean the carburetor, check the jets and especially the float height. Fit an inline fuel filter between the tank and carb, its an old bike it will probably be a bit rusty inside the fuel tank. Is the plug OK with a nice brown colour?? maybe its running too rich or lean!
You dont have a cousin up north called "Jivebunny" or "bodyguard" do you??

Haha, yeah I've noticed the stuff likes to fall off game it plays.

I'm not really that knowledgeable about striping bikes, I am a tinker-type guy mostly phone/pc/tv/camera repairs but I've never had something mechanical like a car or bike to play around with. I've got myself a Haynes manual so hopefully that should help
I don't know what you mena by plug? but I have noticed a thick, black, sludgy-type oily stuff building up around the end of the exhaust, this makes me this it runs lean.

I can see where you're coming from, the username isn't really a major part of my life and I see it the same as drinking and riding (it's just not a good idea)
As for crushed foot, my normal shoes got wet so I wore my steel toe cap boots that day, I'm limping but I should be alright.
I hope I don't come across as some young hooligan rider that just blasts as fast as he can, I try to be as respectful as I can, I always say thank you if a car moves over in traffic, if I see someone filtering behind me I pull over in a lane to let them pass me, I always shoulder check and I always let the bigger bikes have first right to the lights or the likes 'cause I don't want to hold anyone up.
I even do the *nod* but it seems unless you're on a Superbike you are not worthy of nods. |

Lucky man haha, steel caps can act as guillotines for the toes. Get yourself some proper boots whenever you can, not only are they safer but they'll be massively more comfortable. I can rest my footpegs against my shins at a standstill making me more stable. Not to mention the added dexterity of being able to feel the controls with your feet.
No you don't, you just sound like someone who happens to be learning all of the common lessons in a short space of time and its digging at your confidence. The fact that you're worried about it and trying to do better is all you/we really need to know. We live and we learn

Well, everyone loves a good scary story.
Even if there's one chap out there that's had a steel toe cut into his foot (what's his name?) then how many have avoided damage because of it? Nobody knows because that doesn't make for a scary story.
But I can imagine many more circumstances in which steel toes will help you, versus one - the toe of a hard soled boot bends up sharply - where they might in theory cause more harm to your already wrecked foot.
This is exactly the kind of anecdotal bullshit that needs challenged because it can be used to justify wearing trainers or worse. Might as well, mate, steelies do more harm than good, innit, bloke said.

Well that was silly, wasn't it. Even if it wasn't broken, it doesn't cost anything to just stop and say "Sorry!"... Chances are that motorist isn't going to bother moving over for motorcycles in the future.
