Hi guys , new on the forum and need some advice if poss?

We picked up a Peugeot XPS, which was actually a Peugeot XP6T, for Josh a couple of months ago, engine was a runner, good brakes, suspension etc but cosmetics were ratty. He isn't 16 until September so plenty of time to get it right.

Anyway, with the lack of plastics in stock we started looking on e-bay, using the search criteria "Peugeot XPS/XP6 spares / repairs" we got hundreds of returns, the most interesting being fairly local and a full bike with 11 months MOT ! The previous owner had blown the piston, replaced cylinder and piston/rings, on rebuild he had a test ride, and heard what he described as a "Knock", he thought it was crank/bearing related. We went and had a look, we only wanted plastics,tyres/wheels and any salvageable bits so at £150 it was a steal. Very nice. If needed we had an engine to drop straight in.

It was delivered yesterday, I had a new battery fully charged so fitted that and added fuel. A minute later running. Almost sweet as a nut, it doesn't like low revs at tickover and when you blip the throttle it doesn't pick up "sharply" (think this could be down to the Technigas exhaust and possibly not rejetted?). I heard no "typical" crank or bearing noise. I can't ride anymore but a neighbour took it up the road, as he was changing 1>2 I heard and he heard a "Knock", he looked back,down and left, he came back and confirmed what I heard and saw, had a look at the chain, worn, tight and def needs replacing. We both think what the lad heard was the chain against the swinging arm.

A few things, the swinging arm doesn't look like the XP6 one at all, there is a chain tensioner , near where the swinging arm meets the main frame, none on this one. The way it is configured the spring pressure would push it "up" and away from the swinging arm. Possibly off a "road bike " style moped, bear in mind these share DNA with the XR, Rieju, Derbi, MH Furia etc there is potentially loads of donors out there for this arm? Because this one has 2 mounts available for the suspension and it is set lower Josh can actually sit on it comfortably so we would really like to retain this one if possible?

The questions then, given the description, could it be some sort of chain slap and not crank related? Has anyone come across a similar problem with the tensioner, if so how did you get around it? Chain and sprocket set on order. Cool

If it's badly worn and very loose, the chain can even skip a tooth on the front sprocket.

You can also get quite a pronounced "knock" which you feel through the footpegs if there are seized links on the chain as they go over the sprocket.

I'd get the chain and sprockets changed and see what it's like.

At the simplest, if it's very occasionally banging the chain off the top of the swingarm. You could put a strip of helicopter tape along it.

Pretty certain it is chain/sprocket related? Will fit the chain and sprocket Wednesday and update after that. In the mean time, had some square section tube, grinder and pillar drill and ooh what's that in the corner? welder. Now remodded and has the chain tensioner on Very Happy

Also found that the gearbox is low on oil, I'm assuming the screw in the cover is an oil level indicator? Another possibility?????

Does it have w centre stand that has a weak spring? Or a missing rubber bump stop for the stand to bump on? I had a Triumph that the centre stand would clatter the frame when riding over potholes or pedestrians.

couldn't wait. Went down the local spares shop and picked up a chain, £12 won't break the Bank.

Got home and fitted it, can't believe the front sprocket is held on by a bloody circlip, my neighbour took it up the road, guess what ? Cured !!!

Josh is over the Moon and so am I, not £200 bottom end rebuild and a good looking little starter bike. All for £200. New top end ,new chain and sprocket set, new tyres, new fork seals, new battery. Can't be bad.

By the way, as a matter of interest, had a close look at the old chain, really badly worn, one of the rollers had lost its "outer roller cage", so at a guess I would say that particular link was the one causing the noise. Definitely need changing anyway.

Needs the exhaust either replacing or repainting, paint will do for the moment I guess.

Doing my usual and searching 'tinterweb and found a Dutch site selling complete Gianelli exhaust system for €95 ! equivalent to about £65 with the strong £ at the moment, guess it will be getting a makeover Wink
