Niewish bike has a chrome exhaust. I hated chrome before I bought this bike but thought what the heck, its only the exhaust, all the rest is chrome effect plastic. How hard can it be to keep in good nick?

Neutral

I hate chrome more. The exhaust constantly has crud burnt and stuck to it and it looks tattier than a tatty satin black exhaust when tatty. Before I give up and spray this exhaust black, is there any quick and easy way of keeping chrome clean?

@Grr666

Will try Thumbs Up

@Kramdra

It hasn’t flaked off or gone manky yet, it counts as chrome until that happens or I got sick of cleaning and polishing it and paint it black. Thumbs Up

I consider the shoddily constructed, £50 Indian home market chrome exhaust on my enfield to be disposable, and have looked after it accordingly.

It's been on for five years now and still hasn't rusted through.

Do you expect your Sinnis to still be up and running in 5 years?

Not sure. Last one ran to 67,500km, and I'm currently doing 3k a month. I get what you mean. £50 exhausts arnt worth flapping to much over eh?

@Kramda

You have a second hand one that either you or the previous owner have taken 10mph off of the top speed some how. You don't know them that well. Thumbs Up

Mine is not chrome and has been upto an indicated 80mph, downhill, uphill might manage 45... but its not mine, my brother owns it, its kept at his house, somewhat limits my ability to maintain it

I do not like chrome myself, but stainless is nice. Tar or shit can be removed quite easily without damage.

Pic of tatty exhaust?

He added it to his CBR250 that he variously claims to have a 3 billion MPH top speed.

Pic provided. It had been wiped down and scrubbed hard with Halfords Waterless Wash n Shine car wash stuff.

Were you hoping for a picture of chrome flaking off the exhaust?

The engine is quite shit, if its running well, expect 60 indicated as a maximum, while other 125's will indicate 80.

How fast does it go then?

Would somebody in the west London area lend us a GPS, or follow me up a motorway to see how fast mine will go? If it makes Kramdra feel better I can do it with our without the screen that is currently on it.

I would be inclined to spray said exhaust with wd-40 or gt85 or whatever spray oil is deemed to be good if I had been out on it in the wet or washed it..

If I was going down the protection route I'd use ACF50.

Thanks for suggestions. Thumbs Up

I didn't think of acf50 or wd40 because I thought they would just burn off the first ride after applying.

Problem with ACF50 is that it burns off on exhausts.

to an extent yes .. but I was thinking of doing it before you park it up after use .. in use the heat will keep moisture at bay.. but when off the cold will attract it....

and whilst were suggesting what to use ..if you is skint... try engine oil on a rag....

TLDR all of it.

Be careful how you clean the exhaust.
Most of the shit is road tar flicked up by the tyres.
It is like very course grinding paste. Gum with an abrasive mixed in.
I use petrol to dissolve the tar by soaking with a rag.
Minimal rubbing as it's the rubbing which scratches the chrome.
When you get all the shit off then use a chrome/metal polish.
|Some metal polish will remove metal so take care how often you use it as you will eventually wear the chrome off it's not very thick.

Unfortunately Copycat my bikes more or less in constant use.

@MCN

Tar sounds right. It was the crap on the downpipe bit that needed a brillo pad to remove with the Wash N Shine.
