Hi,
I have been given a 1982 CG125 without an engine.. Question is, can I put any year cg125 replacement back in her? I'm not even sure if she's 12 or 6v!
Cheers

any year cg engine will fit, but making the electrics work is another matter , better off putting the correct year in if you don't want too much hassle

So if it turns out to be a 12v, I can stick a newish engine in her. Brilliant news!

Since it's an '82 it'll be 6V. You can certainly put a Brazilian 12V engine in, but you will have to change the ignition coil and condenser unit for a CDI and appropriate coil. The wiring modification is minimal, piece of cake. You can keep the bulbs and battery at 6V no problem. If you wanted it at 12V you can keep the switchgear, they'll be overrated for 12V, as will the loom, it'll be thicker for the extra current.

I'm not sure about late late CG's, do they still run the lights off AC? Or do they run off the battery? If so, might be a bit more awkward but I wouldn't of thought too hard, maybe need a proper regulator rectifier

I'm not sure what engine components are different, any more info on that?

The last thing I'd do is stick the awful 6V system in
I'd be looking for a common as muck 12v leccy start AC CDI motor.
I'd stick the newest bestest cheapest lump I could find in and do the
pretty simple wiring mods.

'82 model is almost certainly going to be a 6v system.
Engines are interchangeable in the frame, but as said the electrics is the niggle.
As a project-masocist.. even given an old CG frame, I'd probably not be too eager to try and make a motorbike out of it.
A good 'genuine' CG is worth maybe £500-£900.. starting with a 'free' donor, might make it look tempting, but without an engine, you are starting from behind to be able to make a running, road-legal bike, for less than you could buy one already there.
And my first question would be, do you have the V5 for it? without that, I'd not want to do ANYTHING to it.. too many of these things are nicked, and broken for spares... and you could have the bit left over with all the ident numbers on it!
But, if you have the V5 for it? Well, CG's tend to get ridden into the ground by owners told that they are 'bullet-proof' and that low-maintenence means no-maintenence.. and engines are some-what in demand by folk who have learned the hard way that they cant run without oil, or without tappets adjusting from time to time, or that piston rings and valve guides WILL eventually wear out and fitting a chinky copy-carb wont fix them!
If you go hunting for CG engines? Well, e-bay chucks up plenty of offerings from maybe £100 for something of more dubiouse oragin, up to near £300, for ones that may or may not be less dubiouse..
I think that 'new' crated Chinese CG copy engines can be had for little more.
BUT.. that's just the start.. if you then have to replace the entire wiring loom to make it work.. buy a new battery, all new bulbs, possibly new switches 'cos you have AC direct switches and need regulated 12v for lights, etc etc etc.. it'll get very expensive, very quickly JUST to get it 'working', without any thought of renovation...
And it's an 'old' example... 30+ years, and incomplete, I would imagine what bits you have are far from pristine.... worry-points for me would be the steel wheels, that are prone to rot from the inside, likely to demand new rims and spokes.. add new bearings and seals, and brake shoes, then work up to the chassis; what state are the forks in? Then add new headrace bearings & new swing-arm bushes.. after checking that the swing-arm is actually sound... new chain and sprockets.. and the work and the bill is starting to get a bit steep.... and anything that turns out not to fit, be beyond salvage or actually not there, like the all enveloping tin chain guard, and you could be chasing even more expense and hard to track down 'original' parts...
More corners you cut, 'not' doing such a contientiouse 'restoration', then the less it will cost, but the less it'll be worth.. and either way, its unlikely to prove cost effective....
And for what you are likely to need to obtain to turn that into a runner .. your most ecconomical way of getting it all, and being sure that it's compatible and will work together.... is to buy another 'complete' CG125 to get all the bits.... do that? And well, which would take more or less money to make good? You could end up with exactly what you have now as 'Left-Overs' when you have done.
I'd be very very wary of taking that on as a 'project'... and I do about a project a year... It is a MUGS GAME!!! Be warned!

Far too many projects are taken on with far more enthusaiasm than realism, and never even reach the point of being an uneconomical motorcycle; hassles, problems, along the way often leave them very expensive piles of parts good to no-one.

Think very hard about whether you REALLY want a 'project', and whether you have the tools, time, money, and perseverance to see it through... right now, I think that THAT is probably what you need far more than an engine that will bolt in the frame..... and maybe a Haynes manual... £20 which would probably have answered the question you posed before you asked it.. and if you persevere will certainly answer an awful lot more, before you're done!!
