waving pedestrians across

What are the rules surrounding this? I was always told never to wave pedestrians across in case other drivers hadnt seen them.

I ask as today I was filtering slowly past stop start traffic when a van stopped randomly as he should have been going forward with the traffic. I couldn't see past the van and assumed he had stalled pulling away.

As I get past a woman and her son are hurrying across. It was close. I swerved.

There wasn't an official crossing anywhere in sight and its a stupid place to cross as its a 40mph road.

It is a PITA when pedestrians stop and stare at you as if, 'Do I walk or do I wait? Will they wave me across?'

I prefer to just ignore if stopped and let them decide.

You are correct that it is wrong to wave them across due to your own restricted sighting.

Some folk are a rule unto them self and will counter this advice though.

Looks like Portman Road? I'd agree it's not a place you'd expect someone to cross, unless you were expecting the unexpected. In which case it would be expected. Not unexpected.

But as said, your assumption he'd stalled was the error. He'd stopped for some reason - until you know that reason you assume nothing.

tis indeed Portman road weasley.

Normally its people looking at their phones not realising the traffic has moved. Happens every few hundred metre along that stretch, especially in rush our when nothing is moving particularly fast.

You're right in that i shouldn't assume. Will do better.


Is there a concrete rule in the highway code that states you should not wave people across?

Think this is Portman road. Weird place to cross, but also weird place not to have a crossing. There's a play park on the side of the road.

Plus, that close to Oxford road, seeing idiots doing unusual things is to be expected. Well done on not killing them.

I like waving pedestrians across to their doom, watching them thank me before getting cleaned out from the opposite direction because they don't seem to look.

I never do that shit, seen some dude wave a woman and two kids across a road a few years back and they literally almost got flatted by an 18 wheeler.
