Xbox One and Satellite Internet

Hi All

We have just had satellite internet put in (live on a farm).

Speeds are not bad, 10-20 meg.

Previously on the old line with Talk Talk we got 2/3.

Company who installed, Wurzel (based around Oxford) somewhere said that no problems playing on-line on the XB1 as one of the people who works there has it and uses it no problems.

Noticed when I first tried on-line it was ok but when i tried to party chat and play a friend I was having a whole word of problems.

Googling seems to suggest it's because my XB1 is showing a strict NAT type?

Does anyone know if with satellite internet you can change this to open? We don't have a router, just an Ethernet cable coming into the house which we then run through power line?
Just wanted to gauge opinion / ideas before I go back to them next week

Think about the distance the data has to travel., back and forth.

Satellite Inet is usually a data packet burst affair.
It will store a certain amount of data then chuck it all up at once.

I've rarely seen one that has a constant, 2-way data stream.

I have satellite Internet here. While it's very fast on downloads and uploads, it does mean increased latency compared with terrestrial internet. As CaNsA says, even at the speed of light the distances the signal has to travel means that you're looking at around 600mS lag overall. While this is acceptable for normal browsing, Skype and other VoIP services, it's dire for gaming. I'm surprised the provider told you it would be OK.

Of course they'd give the whole sales patter, I bet business is sliding with all the "super-fast" projects popping up.

I did consider satellite, but it was the cost for me. Cheapest I found was around £70/m last time I looked and I think that had a data cap. Stuck with 2mbit until BT can be arsed upgrading.

That's new about the no router thing though, NAT issues usually mean blocked ports.

Thanks for the replies, I was sceptical at first but the decision to move to satellite wasn't mine.

The Ethernet comes into the house and is then plugged into some POE box / socket?

We live close to an airfield (Hinton) as they have some big mast up their where i believe it might be Fibre cabled in?

It is then beamed across into the village where we were, not too many miles as the crow flies.

As I write this, on the computer my ping is 19ms, download is 7.61 and upload is 10.71.

The XB1 is showing the download as 4.82 and between 80-195 ms.

This isn't too much off what i had with Talk Talk although the NAT type is being problematic.

I can't help with the xbox thing and the last time I used Satilite Internet it was so slow.
Why you don't have a router, at least for the added security it provides if setup properly.
