Dunno Paddy, I wasn't there when it went, apparently the clocks did a disco dance and the next time he tried to start it, the starter barely clicked.

Yup, the voltage regulator packed up and put too much charge into the battery - it's a sealed unit, so the heat and gas that creates had no place to go.
The next thing, if you're lucky, is the case splits and acid dribbles out - if you're unlucky, the battery explodes and there's acid everywhere.

Although 'sealed' maintenance free there should still be a breather vent
Perhaps the breather was plugged and that's why it 'inflated'.
From the pictures it looks as though it got warm due to short/overcharge.
Gassed but no way for the valves to vent to atmosphere so it inflated.
Lucky. Taking them out when they pop is like army U.X.B. operation.

Shouldn't make so light of it really, when a battery lets go, it can be pretty serious.
Fortunately, it's never happened to me, but I've been around when a few car batteries have grenaded - worst one was when a colleague was leaning over an unsecured unit and it blew; not only was he showered with H2SO4, but he was KO'd by the bit that hit him in the face.
Luckily, a couple of people were on the spot and we picked him up, shoved his face in a sink and gave him a real good shower - saved his sight and he only got a few acne type scars.

always rememeber my dads mate charging a truck battery then testing it, caused a spark an the whole thing blew up - guy was covered in black crap (acid?)

I had a pretty much identical one sat in my garage before I give it to the pikey. Not quite as badly inflated but had to be cut out of the battery tray then shot with my airgun.
Pretty sure it was the same brand.
