Insuring your bike at a different address

Probably done to death but was looking at getting an R6 in a couple years but I live in London. They're asking £1.5k TPO let alone TPFT or fully comp even on a couple years no claims. Price barely moves even if I add more years to no claims. I'd have to be 30+ before it becomes affordable and who wants to wait 9 years?

My brother lives in Guildford and his insurance quotes are far cheaper.

3 questions.

1. Could I use his address and say the bike stays there overnight in his garage even though it wouldn't and not get caught?

2. If caught, is that illegal and could I get done for it? (Could I blag it and say I live with my brother and was visiting my parents in London Mr officer?)

3. I already know if it's stolen at my home address overnight they wont pay, but will it void my insurance in the event of a collision on the road?

I hate London sometimes.

you could have the policy revoked due to misrepresentation - the reason it's cheaper supposedly is there's less risk involved in insuring the bike if it's spending most of it's time at your brothers.

this could be seen as fraud by misrepresentation.

If you're involved in a claim then your whole story could/would start falling apart.

The bigger the cheque that your insurance company might have to sign, the more they'll try to find ways to invalidate your cover.

Chances are you'd get away with it but I don't think it would take anyone long to pick holes in your story by asking a few questions.

2. Yes and yes. Maybe you could blag it if the traffic cop is stupid enough to believe a crap excuse or maybe he'd be quite pissed off that you tried to take him for an idiot.

I dont know someone who has bikes and cars registered at their mums address as insurance is cheaper and just happens to visit a friend where they"don't live but do live"

It's all very well and good.. but then a traffic copper stops you. Checks your license details. Finds out about your insurance details. Might notice they're not the same addresses...

Whilst I like legit insurance, sometimes the price increase of £200 for a bike that costs £87 to insure in a worse area... just doesn't seem worth it.

might be a bit obvious if you're stopped and checked and the address on your licence is in London and the insurance is in Surrey... wouldn't take PC Genius long to figure out why...

Whether that would mean you weren't insured - is down to the insurer.
Accident or theft... i imagine any insurer will do anything they can to wriggle out of paying anything.

You pays your money (or not in this case) and takes your chances...

So the only way the traffic coppers would get any suspicion is by the difference between license address and insurance address. If they match up, no reason to get suspicious right?

I think the chances of it being figured out by a traffic cop in a 'routine stop' or whatever they choose to call it when they stop you just because they can are pretty minimal.

If your insurance company was looking at the possibility of having to pay out upwards of hundreds of thousands then they'll look for ways to invalidate your policy, the more they might have to pay out they more effort they might put into finding a way out.

Pro tip: if you're going to do something like insurance fraud, don't put your plans on the internet.

My bike was always stored in my parents garage and insured there, my licence was at my home address, told insurance this and they didn't mind so its not illegal if your really doing that.

TL DR

You will normally only get full cover if kept at the notified address.
So if you decide to park it at your sleeping address and it is nicked you will struggle to get a full payout. It's in the big print in most insurer's T&C.

Don't see how your licence address matters in this at all.
I've spent many years at various addresses and not bothered updating my actual driving license address - have always had my insurance registered at my current address though. I know I was stopped once for speeding when my address on my licence was in England and I was living in Scotland and PC plod never noticed or said a thing.

Especially is the Op is on the electoral register/pays council tax....
