Morning all,

We've finally made it to our new home in Italy, and apart from the heatwave pushing temps into the 40s, it's been fantastic Very Happy

I insured my bike before I left, which was lucky as I had an off two weeks after arriving Wink But now my 3 month EU cover has run out Sad Does anyone know an insurer that will do a 12 month EU policy. The sticking point seems to be not being a UK resident Sad The only one I've found that is close is eBike, but I'm no longer a UK resident.

I managed to get car insurance with AXA who don't seem to care about anything as long as the car is registered at a UK address.

If you we still a UK resident your current policy will still be in effect.

The EU cover period you talk about is just like for like cover. i.e the insurer will match the level of cover you have when in the UK.

Regardless of that, the 3rd directive means that your cover is valid 3rd party the length of the policy.

Since you seem to have moved to Italy though non of that applies. Why are you trying to buy UK insurance? Just buy Italian insurance like everyone else in Italy does.

If it were that simple, I'd already have done it Sad The majority of ex-pats keep UK insurance wherever possible. To get Italian insurance I'd need to change to Italian plates, which will cost around £1,000 Sad

The EU law actually only covers the bare legal minimum for that country (which is not necessarily 3rd party), not your normal cover, and I'd rather a little bit more than that if I can get it.

Bikesure and MCE have 180 days EU travel.

If you stay more than 180 days in Italy you must change your plates anyway.

IMO the cheapest way would be to sell your bike in UK and buy Italian one - I think even you can have a profit that way.

The 3 months EU cover on your current policy is neither here nor there. Check up on the 3rd directive.

It's all moot anyway as soon as someone claims against you the insurers will find out you don't live in the UK and the whole thing will be invalid. For the same reason you won't make a claim, so you don't need anything more than 3rd party cover.

Selling the bike in the UK and buying one in Italy is the best way to go about things.

If you seriously want to keep it, then try some of the dutch or german companies. UK insurers can't seem to handle the fact that some of us like to travel on our bikes (particularly if you go outside the EU)

I know, but there's no way I can replace a 1980 Goldwing out here. Although, there are some very nice old Ducatis & Moto Guzzis Smile

If you're not a UK resident, you will need to reregister your bike in Italy and insure it in Italy, surely?

Are the italian authorities tying to charge you duty on you're, now imported bike? It's illegal to do so, according to the EU, but plenty of EU countries are doing it and getting away with it!

Will you need to change your UK licence for an Italian one?

I kept my UK licence when I lived in Cyprus, I was supposed to change it but never bothered, never had any problem with insurance, in fact it was an advantage because the local plod CBA with you once they saw the UK licence!

Yup, supposed to do it within 12 months, but few bother

Nope, they're not bothering me at the moment. There is a "registration" fee that costs almost £1,000 though, and that's what putting me off at the moment

Again, supposed to do it when it runs out, or you get Italian plates.

That's pretty much the way it is here, you never get stopped with UK plates as it's too much paperwork Smile I'm just a little uncomfortable with just having the legal minimum on the bike. I'd rather have theft/damage and fully comp if possible.

Cheers, I'll have a look at them in a bit Thumbs Up
