This is what killed off the rider policy. Fronting is illegal so mind you don't get caught out = possible jail time for fraud. 3rd party only cover, so if you wreck it you lose it. Also if you get caught with a bald tyre/dodgy brakes/other C&U problems your uncle gets done for permitting. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Rider policies were done by CC, so you could insure an old clanker for peanuts and ride your 'mates' gpz750 turbo on that policy. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Don't know if I've missed the point here, but you can get policies that allow you to ride other people's bikes and cover you for accidental damage in case you bin it. ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

My carole nash policy has a ride other bikes bit. As long as the other bike is fully comp insured I can ride it, with the catch being there's £700 excess if its binned. ____________________ Daytona 675R Road - 5EB R6 Track sold

I'd be astonished if you have fully comp cover on other bikes. I've only ever seen 3rd party cover, to which an excess wouldn't apply.
Thinking about it though... isn't the bike's owner a third party? They're not you, they're not your insurer.
Disregarding insurance for a second, if you bin their bike due to your negligence, you've caused them a loss and they can seek redress from you.
So would your third party cover indemnify you against that claim, just as it would against any other third party that you injured or caused loss to, such as a pillion? If not, why not?

Its not third party. Im fully comp on other bikes, by carole nash, as long as the other bike is also insured (with whoever). The claim would be through carole nash, and i would pay the £700 excess.

As long as you have the owner’s permission, you can ride any bike1. In addition to Rider Cover1 which gives you FREE accidental damage cover when riding other bikes
1 Rider Cover: Both bikes must have comprehensive cover, terms and conditions apply - carolenash.com/rider-terms-and-conditions. ____________________ Daytona 675R Road - 5EB R6 Track sold

Hmm, interesting, it does indeed cover accidental or malicious damaged or vandalism but not fire, theft or attempted theft (yeah, that was vandalism, that was).
https://www.carolenash.com/rider-terms-and-conditions
The excess is currently £750 and it'll be interesting to see what would happen when both underwriters start wrangling over who actually covers the damage.
Thing is, if you borrow my bike and bin it, you owe me the full cost of repairs. Here's the bill. Pay it, in full, I don't care how. Don't start talking about "excess", that's of no interest to me.
Under those circumstances, you're £750 down if you rely on this "comprehensive" cover. Wouldn't you rather that your insurers considered me a third party and fully indemnified you?[*]
One might almost suppose that they've forseen this possibility and are actually offering a lesser degree of cover that reduces their liability. While marketing it as extra cover.

And it doesn't cover commuting.
Oh, and no bikes that have previously been written off. |
