So, I finally got around to taking my RoSPA exam over the weekend and passed (silver). When you pass this or the IAM one, do you tell your insurance company? Has anyone ever done that? Has it made any immediate difference on your premium? I'm just wondering if that's something you mention only at renewal time.

When I passed my DSA test, I was told to call up the insurer and tell them right away. The response was "OK, thanks" and nothing else.

With your RoSPA one, it isn't something that, if you withhold, would change your insurer's opinion of your cover.

I suspect if you call them now, you may well get a discount which may or may not cover the change of details fee they could also charge.

Personally, I'd wait until renewal.

Problem with insurance is that it's all based on statistics, the number of people reporting advanced qualifications and the impact statistically is I think so low that it won't affect premiums.

In all likelihood it'll make all of £1.50 annual premium difference which pro rata will be something like 75p and they'll charge you £30 to note the papers.

I'd wait until renewal.

Why don't you just ring them and ask?

Discount >= admin fee, do it.
Discount < admin fee, don't do it.

It's insurance, they'll cry when it comes to claim time that you didn't declare that you were uber God at riding because certificate bro, then they'll wiggle out.

It won't happen, but thats pretty much the slippery serpent insurance I expect I'm dealing with, therefore I'll never be disappointed with the service.

Having been a RoSPA and IAM examiner for over 30 years, it used to be the case that the discounts used to be quite substantial, but these days the majority are not bothered whether you are a better risk, the are interested in numbers, so being a member of say the BMF or MAG is likely to get you a better or bigger discount, but there is no harm in mentioning it when you come to renew.

And you are not obliged to mention it and it will not have any adverse affects on your policy if you have to make a claim and you have not declared it.
