I've never had the chance to go touring into the wilds, crossing deserts, jungles, ice or mountains but when I'm old and retired I do plan to get myself way out there one day.

I guess some people here must have been on some pretty wild treks into the unknown - where have you been and how did you get on with it?

As far as inhospitably go the two days riding through this specific part of northern Mongolia are right up there with a ride through North West London.

Gloucester General Infirmary....
Though technically I didn't go there 'on' the bike... that was in a hedge at the side of the road... but a pretty girl in a camper van had stopped, and she showed me the bed, and offered me drugs, so.. way-hey! I was straight in! Next thing I knew I was in this bludy hospital, with an incredibly less attractive 'Matron', no drugs, and a coppa trying to get me to admit to careless driving, before they chucked me out on the street, no drugs, knowing not where I was, less where the bike was!

Standing up to my thighs in a Yorkshire bog with my bike next to me, everyone else disappearing over the horizon, me beeping my hooter and realising it was under water.

Years ago, first time in Manchester for Uni, on a 125 with L plates, about 8pm in winter, I got lost in what I didn't know was Moss Side. I'd turned down a dead end to look at my phone and had just gone past a massive guy who I saw, in my rear view mirrors, stop and turn in the middle of the road and just stand there looking at me about 100 yards away.

Had to fly past him at 40 (half a meter away from him, he didn't budge - I reckon he had a decision to make and didn't want to hurt his arm) and straight out onto the road, could've ended badly if there was a car coming...

Newham.

I found myself in a strange and backwards land, where people walked in a hunched manner. Their faces showed a constant look of both confusion and anger, whilst they shambled along in the bottom a concrete canyon.

I arrived at a set of traffic lights, which turned red as I approached, causing me to stop. The vehicle behind me did not have the mental capacity to understand this simple code, and overtook, blaring its horn to clear the half-men from its path. They attempted to communicate with the vehicle in their language of gutteral grunts, I can only assume that they viewed the vehicle as a large prey animal or a demi-god due to its size and golden colour.

I continued deeper into the area of Newham, the sky seeming to darken as I moved further from the river. The behavior of the locals becoming ever more erratic as I approached the tower (block) that was my destination. Some appeared to be following the early stages of a mating ritual while they clustered around a watering hole, others gathered and foraged for food in a green building and attempted to haggle the price with a gentleman from the orient, presumably a wandering trader from the east, or from Tower Hamlets.

Presently I reached the tower that was my destination, great relief washing over me as the shambling hordes diminished. I met my host, known only as the Pork Lord, who appeared to use his flatulence to communicate. He introduced me to his daughter, who showed great promise as a future despot to the simple beings at ground level. I spent a pleasing day in the grotto of the Pork Lord, fixing his motor-cycle such that he could escape the area in haste should the collective half-men rise up in anger against his daughter's rule.

I left as the sun began to set, not wishing to be trapped in such an area in darkness. Sun-worship is not uncommon among such backwards people, leading to a palpable feeling of desperation among them as darkness claims the sky for an unknowable time.

Somewhere in mid-Wales, the locals seemed to recoil in horror and draw their curtains as *a motorcycle* stopped in the village.
The pub appeared open and had signs advertising food, but the red-faced owner rushed out waving his arms - and demanded I leave the car park immediately (?)
A cafe down the street let me in but announced they were closing and could not take any orders.
A small shop fell silent as I went in to buy some food.
She grudging let me have some crisps and a drink.
A young man looked troubled, then darted out and locked his car, lest I somehow stole it when I left.

Snap. M6 into birmingham, caught out in a blizzard, zero visibility, snow caked visor, snow caked glasses, couldn't even make out where lanes were. At night. Fully loaded, and with a pillion.

Wales seems to feature fairly highly.

Top of Hellfire Pass in February.

Bothy in Mid Wales wasn't much better.

Even in the Summer the "Worlds End" road between Coedpoeth and Llangollen is pretty desolate and shonky, in the Winter it's just crazy.
https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/stinkwheel/rbr/DSCN0757.png

Then there's this weird-arse ghost town bit near Devils Bridge.
https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/stinkwheel/rbr/DSCN0784.png

I've been all over the place in Scotland, doesn't seem nearly as inhospitable for some reason. Although going up over Rannoch Moor in a storm must count among some of the least agreeable motorcycling experiences it's possible to have.

Calais.

Absolute shit hole with a load of rough immigrants strolling across motorways, main roads and all sorts. Couldnt wait to get through customs to relative normality/safety.

Oh yeah.

Ross-on-Wye.

I'm not normally a superstitious person but I booked onto a campsite there, had a horrible feeling about the place, packed up my tent, got back on my bike and fucked off. Checked into a hostel several miles away.

Found myself back in the town centre the next day, spending my lunch time giving first aid to a tramp who'd just had the shit kicked out of him while fending off unhelpful police officers who were trying to take my details. I was busy scooping puke out of an unconcious drunks mouth with my fingers at the time so told them if they weren't going to do something helpful, they could at least go and direct the ambulance in.

"Wyenot visit Ross-on-Wye?". Let me count the Wyes.
