Looking for ex-pats wisdom here.

For example I am looking at pre-reg 0 miles SUZUKI GSX-S1000F ABS bike in Germany it would cost me 11300 OTR. That is £8000. About £2000 cheaper than in the UK.

Where is the cheapest place to buy new bike in the EU? Are Ducatis cheaper in Italy?

We're being ripped off.

In 2008 when the economy went belly up and the pound fell to virtual polarity with the € the price of bikes went up.

(Because we are told they are imported from € land).

Queue 2015, pounds back to €1.4 against the £ and funny enough prices the same.

We are being ripped off. For a £2K saving, I would get a Sleazy Jet Flight to the Father land and ride the fecker home.

(Don't know what the clocks are like, but if they are a digital Speedo, you can simply change them over by doing a series of button pushes.

UK residents cannot drive a foreign registered vehicle on UK roads.

Still happens, a guy who I had the misfortune to know a few years back bought a Corvette in Germany and drove it home because it saved him a whopping wad of cash.

I did just that last month.

Although the DVLA state you can't on there website, no source is given and if you ask them, they cannot tell you what law (road traffic or otherwise) actually is broken. Normally when they give advice the opposite is tru, the relevant section is quoted directly underneath

It's actually buried in some EU commission ruling from 1994 but it's not black and white, which even the DVLA admit when pressed. Individual circumstances have to be taken into account and as long as the nova is completed with hmrc, all the insurance etc is in place and you can clearly demonstrate to plod you have just ridden off the ferry and are on the way home / to the mot station nearest home, there are no issues.

It's simple scaremongering by civil servants who give a different answer each time you ask.

I had no issues on the ride home, or when coming to register it and explaining the mileage differences.
Given as you can get an export plate in Germany which comes with insurance, I'd go there if buying new, it's more set up for this kind of thing

What about Andorra?

They are not in the EU but they use the Euro and their booze and fags are cheap so maybe their motorcycles are too...

On the plus side it has some amazing motorcycle roads if you are ever in that area and loads of bike shops too.

Ha I genuinely wondered before I picked mine up if the side stand would be on the right so it would lean into the pavement...spent ages trying to research how to switch it over before finding out Johnny Foreigner is expected to dismount into the carriageway!

Wherever you buy in the EU you will have to pay UK VAT when you import it. That will destroy the majority of the saving. Thought you do get to claw back the VAT paid in the country of purchase.

As well as at sell it on time. You are looking at lower resale price on a import.

If you think that a £2K saving is worth all the time and effort you will have to go through. Then go for it Thumbs Up

Not the EU but the new Africa Twin in white without DCT works out at £9,400 in Switzerland

Still waiting on the UK price. I expect it to be over £10,000

You know I'm not entirely convinced it'll be £10k here. That puts it as a direct competitor to the VFR800X and it's going to be in the same category too. I can't see Honda pitting one against the other. There's a throbbing great big gap between the NC750X (£6299) and the VFR800X (£10299) and I think they may just fill it with the AT.

That one in Poland must be the pre-VAT price as VAT in Poland is 23% plus they have Excise tax on vehicles too.

Make sure prices quoted in foreign parts are on the road, before drawing comparisons. Prices in America tend to exclude delivery, sales tax (anywhere from 0 to 10% depending on where you live) and other fees. Still much cheaper than here, but the gap is narrowed slightly.

Didn't go up until 2009 for most that I saw.
I bought a new KTM 690 enduro in 08 and they stayed at that price all year. Went up by over 15% in 2009.

You can't expect prices to go down when bikes have already been bought at a higher price.
