"Conley, of Underwood Avenue in Worsbrough near Barnsley, was last seen in Locke Park - a 40-minute walk from home - at about 20:00 BST on Sunday.

He had gone to play with friends at the park and was due to return home, but police were alerted about two hours later when he did not turn up.

Mrs Fraser said: "He's been known to go in there [the construction site] before and we've told him not to go in.

"[His mother] is devastated, we all are. We will all miss him, he was a lovely little lad."

...a 7 year old? A fucking 40 minute walk from home? Construction site? The police are saying 'tragic accident', I would be getting a case together for 'child neglect'.

At the same age I was playing on building sites, playing on farms, roaming about more than 40 mins walk from home, swimming in ponds, reservoirs, rivers, larking about with an old dingy. Climbing trees, making tree houses, dens, lighting fires, exploring surface water drains. Shooting airguns (supervised) firing catapults, go fishing on my own. Can't understand why people get so rage these days about kids doing what I was doing 20 odd years ago.

I'm pretty sure I was allowed to play out at that age, so long as I didn't stray too far (a mile or so). But if it's OK to let a 7 year old wander that far, at what age is it OK to leave a child alone in the safety of your own home for a long period of time?

I personally wouldn't allow any of my kids to play on a building site, but you can't keep them locked up all day and the little buggers do have a habit of seeking danger. I remember doing the same when I was a kid. 7 years old does seem too young to be that far from home though, a fact that the mother will be all too painfully aware of after the event...

Its all part of the lottery of life. All we can do as parents is try to educate, but ultimately young lads will do things for kicks and some will die. There by the grace of god, and all that...

for clarity, I played on building sites. near my house. not 40 minutes away. im no cotton wool parent, but I prefer my kids to be closer. and alive.

Doubt has been cast whether or not the kid actually went to Locke Park which is quite a distance from the home of his unmarried mother.

When he was 7 years old, I wanted to know where my son was, 100% of the time. I might let him think I'm not watching, but I would have been.

I let him play with some local "bigger kids" once just after moving into a new place and spied one lad, about twice my sons age, started swinging him about and.....well, trying to hurt him basically. I never forget my poor sons face.....he looked totally bewildered and I felt so very sorry for him and heartbroken The lad that was chucking him about kept glancing up at my window, (first floor flat), to see if I was watching.....I was...but he couldn't see me until it went too far and I popped out of the shadows
Some lessons are important when you're growing up IMO and need to be learnt on your own, but, as a parent you haver to be there to pull them out of the river...or the road...or some drainpipe on a building site.
Something I don't agree with is when parents shove responsibility of younger kids on their eldest.....it happened to a small degree when I was little...my bigger brother had to keep an eye out for me on holidays etc, but I see parents making siblings carry the smaller children, chastise them, feed them et al. It's not good, not good at all

Like a lot of kids my age, I used to play in building sites, storm drains, underground tunnels, railway tracks, up high in trees and what have you, but I don't remember that many kids dying. It happened.....but not much The roads were the dangerous places IIRC.....and the "raincoat Brigade" of course
