TL;DR = Job title change within the same company offered of the blue, same hours, same pay below just explains the situation in detail and how the proposal came about and what changes I'd be encountering.

So a while ago I was approached by a manager and asked if I was able to work Saturdays as they didn't seem to happy that someone (possibly head office or a manager making a mistake when changing one shift on the system) had taken me off shift that day permanently without them realizing until they asked and I said "no, I don't work that day anymore".

Fast forward a month possibly more to yesterday when I was called into the office out the blue before starting a shift and had a conversation with the same manager about the whole working Saturday situation although it wasn't just a straight forward "can you or can't you?" it was a "your shifts work with what's required for a role in this section, how do you feel?".

Currently i'm a shelf stacker or customer service advisor if you want to put it nicely (I don't), the hours are rubbish but the wage is good enough to see that I've got enough for myself and the bike each month. I know what's expected in my role and how to operate all areas on the shop floor, CS, self serve, tills etc etc. Although the new role or the role that i'm currently "thinking about" is operations or warehouse staff in that I have no experience in that area or whats expected, how performance is reviewed etc.

As far as I'm aware the hours stay the same as my current contract and so does the pay the only change beside the job title is that I'd be agreeing to work an alternative Saturday, witch basically means that two weeks out of four I'll be working Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The contract would have to be secure and fixed as that's what my current one is.

On the one hand my mind is like "You don't want to stack shelves for the rest of your life and you've seen plenty of people leave the company in the short time that you've been there" but on the other hand "Why would you want to change your job title when you've got yourself to a point in your working life where you have a secure contract a role you understand inside out".

The other thing worth mentioning would be that my hours remain the same and the most challenging task I face would be taking a delivery of the lorry in the morning and then breaking it down for the staff to work (once a week) and then helping to lock up the shop (once a week).

When I was asked "How do you feel about it?" when mentioned yesterday I said "I need time to think, it's a career change, I don't want to make a decision on the spot" and have until tomorrow to decide.

Would you change roles? Any questions to ask before and if I sign the contract? To much change for no benefit?

Thumbs Up to all.

They want to move you to a different role that involves more responsibility and working alternate weekends. Like hell would I consider moving for the same wage.

Sounds like middle management screwed up and is now attempting to save face and get something for nothing.

tl;dr but as above, I assume they're just trying to trick you into being more-to-blame in return for no extra reward. Best way to get a new job title is to get a new job elsewhere for more actual monies.

I don't want one in honesty and that's why one of my train of thoughts is "why would you want to change your job title when you've got yourself to a point in your working life where you have a secure contract a role you understand inside out". This suggestion of changing roles has come without any hint before it being mentioned yesterday for the first time.

I waited several months to have a contract in writing that was unarguable evidence from the company about the security of my role and pay before investing in my 125 last year and really don't entertain the idea of voluntary putting myself out of pocket with a bike I'd have to SORN if I lost my job due to not being able to perform in a new role.

Rogerborg wrote:

I didn't think about it at the time but it is slightly more responsibility beside a general change of daily work tasks the closing of the store is a huge increase and to my understanding would be done alongside rather than alone with someone else working in the same role or a manager.

The taking a delivery of a lorry is a slight change but the targets of working to a set time frame is nothing new as I do that by having to put the stock on the shelves in a set time frame (once a week).

..

I suppose the two main questions I would have are (a) what happens if I do not meet the standards in this role and (b) as I'm taking on more responsibility does this role come with an increase in pay?

Currently I'm getting just over £7 p/h. Is that a decent enough wage or should more responsibility and time (weekends in this case) come with an increase regardless?

The situations a little more than that with the suggested job change on offer and was explained that the reason they'd taken me so long to ask if I could or couldn't work Saturdays was because they'd somehow came to a conversation between them of what hours I would work in a different role without having asked me.

I think they're already convinced though as they seem to have already have a contract prepared in consideration that I'm getting back to them tomorrow. Thinking

Who did what to what now?

So if I understand correctly the question now is "Would you like a slightly different job with different (more?) responsibilities which will involve working Saturdays (and we've already established you don't want that) but for no more money?"

I read that as "We want to get you in on Saturdays by any means we can and this is our next attempt. Here is enough rope to hang yourself with. It is the only extra thing we're going to give you. Please carry it around with you all the time (including Saturdays)."

If you turn it down, they won't be able to understand why. You'll have to spell out that more money is required, while attempting to be diplomatic.

More responsibilities yes the only ones that I know about without doing the role are locking up the store and taking the delivery of the van and getting the stock out to the shop floor. Those two are the two examples that where given to me and I assume everything else I'd find out about in the role. I don't know how much more responsibility I'd be taking on in comparison to the others that work in the same role as my shift pattern is set so that I start early afternoon and finish shortly before the evening meaning that if my hours did stay the same the most I can imagine myself doing it getting a bit of stock ready for floor staff and cleaning up here and there and moving things around.

So on the whole are we all agreed that the only thing obviously not in my benefit in this situation is the increase in work tasks and taking on a completely new roll for no extra money.

So if I ask for an increase in wage and it's agreed and I take the role then all is well?

or..

I ask for an increase in wage due to having time to think about what i'd be taking on they say no and I say no and I resume my current role.

The only two outcomes?

I assume asking for more hours would be counter productive as that's more work for the same wage.

You now have a job where you don't work weekends.

If they want you do a slightly different job with no extra responsibilities I wouldn't expect a pay rise.

They want you to totally change your job and working hours (to include weekends), I'd expect more money. The train drivers in London were whinging about this , not the money, honestly, the work/life balance ...

I currently work Friday / Sunday and the only change would be working a Saturday 2 / 4 weeks every month.

In terms of the role it is a complete change as it's nothing to do with the shop floor and more about everything behind the scenes.

During the short conversation I had it was said that my current hours fit in with the role they want me to go into beside taking me off a week day and asking me to work a Saturday 2 / 4 weeks a month. So since the contracted hours are near enough confirmed as the same I can only assume that since no mention of a wage increase was mentioned it would be the same.

As above, ask for a wage increase;

Yes = accept role
No = Say no thankyou and continue in my current role.

Indeed. Question is, what's in it for you. It looks like they're offering:

(1) Less social hours. Saturday is the day when you ride into the country, go fishing, see your estranged son, whatever. You will now be able to do less of this.

(2) More responsibility. Specifically, keyholder responsibility. Say the store gets turned over when you've been the one to lock up. Who's going to be dragged through a disciplinary then?

Both of these typically equate to more money. Clearly, this is beneficial to your employer or they wouldn't be asking. It needs to be beneficial to you too. To be clear: this is not a job title change. This is a change of both responsibilities and T&Cs.

I'm naturally suspicious of most things so I'd be careful.
I'd want written confirmation that nothing else changes.
I've heard of friends of friends that were 'offered' new contracts, signed them and thought nothing of it. 6 weeks later the company made redundancies and just let those people go without anything. The new contracts they signed put them back in the 2 month probation period as if they were a new employee, where they weren't entitled to anything.

The fact that they didn't even mention money sounds like they reckon you're a soft touch. But then I'm a nasty, suspicious hobbit too.

Oh, and be very wary of being mind-tricked into doing it for a "trial period", with some vague non-promise that they'll see you right if and when it becomes permanent.

I had a similar thing happen to me while employed with a different company a short while ago.

One day the manager walked up to me in a informal manor and told me that my position was no longer available and they had to change it then after a while they had performance meetings with me and always told me I was never good enough and then eventually in the middle of a shift called me up to the office told me to sign something and said bye.

I was young and had no idea what I was doing but once I'd soaked up the reality of getting fired for the first time I realized that stairwells full of druggie injecting themselves in no place for anyone.

It was a very vague conversation more to explain why they hadn't got back to me regarding the Saturdays and to put the proposal to me and really nothing but with the above extra details mentioned I can only assume that everything would be covered in detail if I accepted the role.

Although I spoke to someone that works in that role today and he basically said that he doesn't get paid any more or less than what the people working on the floor do. It sounds like if I accepted the role of "key holder" or "callout" basically meaning that I agree they can phone me at any time to get me to come in and lock the store then I'd get something like 10p extra and there was something else that was worth 15p.. so at most is 25p more although that's not by the managers mouth and isn't confirmed.

I think I've already come to the conclusion that the company is the only one winning in this situation as even if I did get a 25p pay rise or similar that wouldn't even cover the fuel for the additional miles done on my bike. I also don't really like the idea that I should have to have a phone with me at all times waiting to jump at the idea of getting ready and commuting all the way to work at any time of the night or morning when winters only just around the corner.

My face is like Neutral as I think more about this.

If you used to work Saturdays and they accidentally changed your rota so you no longer work Saturdays why don't they just change your rota so that you work Saturdays again?

I was in a very similar situation a few months back, was asked would I take a better job title for the same pay Laughing Laughing I actually do the job already plus more and cover the general manager when he's off(like this week) or out, but theres no way I'm taking on more responsibility without extra pay. Their argument was it would go in my favor on my CV Rolling Eyes plus I'm higher up the ladder, told them where to go and have now been told they will review my salary and contract in Dec but if they don't offer me at least an extra 3k Ill turn them down.

I used to do Saturday / Sunday and got changed to Friday / Sunday, works for me so I stayed quiet of course until this manager got suspicious as to why I didn't work one Saturday that weekend and I said "no I don't work Saturday" and the reply was "Oh, we'll have to do something about that" and then cue asking me to work Saturday and the OP.

The suggestion on the table is to take me of a week day and then leave me on every Friday / Sunday and then Friday / Saturday / Sunday when the alternative weekend comes.

Although I've already told them previously that Saturday night and Sunday morning wasn't a good idea as I was always tired on the roads and couldn't concentrate after only a few hours sleep.. I don't think they understood in the slightest.

..

This situation is what happens when you don't lube up before being called into an office, headache galore.

All I can add to the above is that if someone working in that role fully trained is getting paid the same as I am then I have no hope of getting any more money and benefits no one but the company.

I don't entertain the idea of being used and abused because I own a motorbike just to commute to work at the click of someones fingers regardless of what I'm doing just to put a key in a door and some codes in a device to secure the building.

On the subject of the bike being "on call" means that more miles, more fuel, more brake pads / chain and sprockets, oil, services etc. I mean we're not talking huge numbers here in terms of additional miles but basically without any more money why should I pay more to have my bike maintained for no extra wages.

I'd put all this aside and brush it all off if I could see an obvious benefit to my career path or to progress within the company but when it's just working in the warehouse and back of shop I fail to see it as an upgrade rather a degrade.

I don't mind working Friday / Saturday / Sunday in my current role 2 / 4 weeks a month providing that it's not Saturday night / Sunday morning as above ney thanks.

I've got a feeling my response isn't going to go down well. Laughing

It's illegal for them to require you to work a double-shift anyway. If you think they are going to elbow you out through constructive dismissal try to get that in writing for ammunition.

Thinking about it they told me that they get away with it by half an hour in regards to the gap between the two shifts although the rota on the system had something written under my hours I assume the computer telling them it wasn't supposed to happen.

By the time I got home and settled with the bike and had eaten it was time to kip for five hours before getting up again.. I don't think they understood that either.

The manager who suggested all this change had performance meetings out the blue with me after every shift (same day different weeks, once a week) regarding my performance on the amount of stock I put on the shelf before we opened. The line "if this doesn't improve we'll have to go down the disciplinary route" and then suddenly they stopped after two or three.

This sounds like a company I used to work for.

If they decided your face didn't fit (which could happen if you'd been there for five minutes or five years) their favourite tactic was to move you sideways or slightly upwards, change your responsibilities, then kick you out when you, inevitably, don't perform.

I saw this happen many times, with people being shunted into jobs they were ill suited to, starting out full of themselves that they were climbing the greasy pole, then falling flat on their faces, with no way back.

I would be incredibly wary of this most generous offer, as others have said, there's nothing in it for you but anti social shifts and onerous tasks (I particularly don't like the keyholder/on call thing) and they get away without it costing them a copper coin.

I'd want a damn sight more than 25p an hour for that.

Shaft wrote:

It wasn't even confirmed that this was part of the suggestion just in a conversation with someone who works in that role currently as he said it's 10p more p/h if you accept that part of the job and from what I understood of what he said it's only 25p more than I currently get when fully trained. Again not confirmed by the manager but just wanted an inside idea of what they get paid before responding to the suggestion. The person I spoke to doesn't get 25p more than me infact gets paid the same and also doesn't do the keyholder part of the job.

To be honest I've finally got done with insurance payments and have nothing but renewal to look forward to so if anything was to go tits up the next few months is really the right time.

Part of me is keen to take the offer and escape the tedious tasks of working on a supermarket shop floor such as sitting on tills for hours on end or standing in-front of self service or cleaning tables in the food area for the idea of being more free and working behind the scenes but then as I said i've finally got myself to a place where I've got it in formal writing that I have a set amount of hours on set days of the week for a set amount of money each month. As unexciting as shop floor work is I have a routine and some financial security I don't want to give that up just because someone wanted me to change roles.

I've expressed my concern when it was mentioned at not being able to perform as I said i didn't want it to have any impact or refection as it's not a role I have experience in or even had any desire to go into but I got the "no that wont happen you'll be trained".

I mean above I've said I won't take the offer but I think I really need to go in to the meeting with a clear head and ask all the possible questions and the only reason I see myself taking a job change regardless of Saturday's or not is because it has some benefit to me either being more hours or more pay and the same hours as current.

The one thing that's hitting me as well is that I've been asked to think about a change in role without being fully told what's involved or what to expect so I have no idea what I'm thinking about.

Only reason I can think that they need someone for this role as no one has left is that the one guy who came in injured must be taking an extended period of time of work and they need to fill a gap. Although on the counter side to that I've seen two guys do the warehouse role in my time that have been let go although one was always playing his iPad and rap music at loud volumes thinking he owned the place and the other was asking everyone for money and handouts so i'm yet to see anyone be gotten rid of that hasn't done anything obvious.

I guess to simplify it all either more money or more hours to be offered at the same rate of pay to make the offer appealing and then to get it in writing confirmed that the contract is permanent and secure. If not then saying no can't hurt.
