First of all I'm not really a web person but somehow have some web services I manage, great eh.

One of these services is a catalogue that has links to PDFs in it. The PDFs are stored on a Windows IIS server.

What I need to do is to track each of the PDFs for the number of downloads.

Authentication is not required.

I have Google Analytics however everything I've found so far on the web says that GA is being bypassed due to how they are hosted.
I cannot adjust the code around the link (thinking GA events) as it's generated, I can adjust the link i.e. https://server.internet.org/file.pdf.

I'm happy to migrate the files into an appropriate content management system but it must be free or very very cheap.

Any suggestions?

Can you add new scripts?

The easiest way would be to write a download script. You pass in the file name to the script, it logs it to the database and then redirects to the actual file to download.

Just be careful to only whitelist allowed files as an insecure downloader script can compromise a website.

Look at the server logs or run something like

https://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/IISView/ on the log.
