Cb900f advices !

Good morning everybody,

I'm about to buy a 82 cb900f and would like to know what the main problems of this bike usually are, if you think this is a reliable everyday bike, and what questions I shoukd ask before buying.
Also, do you think the price they ask for is not too high (I know, hard to say without seeing it...)

I would not touch that. It looks like something that's been dragged out of the back of someone's forgotten garage, given a mediocre clean-up and presented as some kind of restoration. Parts will be outrageous to buy and difficult to get hold of.

I have worked on Hundreds

Two cam chains and extremely complex tensioner systems the whole lot need replacing every20k or less
This requires a complete engine strip ignore the rattles and you will need another engine !!

Field coil alternator rotor is a common fail as is the rec reg unit (not the same as modern bikes )

Exhaust valve problems were common mostly on bikes with after market exhausts

900 was he best of the three using this engine the 750 was worse and the 1100 well think pain in wallet

Nice to look at if you like it but to own and ride no way for me !

If you want a retro muscle bike type thing you could get an XJR1300 for that money or an XJR1200 for a fair whack less.

Apparently the 900's have a slightly small and marginal con rod small end eye diameter. They don't like being revved past 9500rpm, and it is advised in buyers guides that if you re-build one of these motor's that to make it more reliable you should consider aftermarket rods.

I like the looks and style of the Euro 750/900/1100's and would have one at the right money. They were more powerful and at least as fast as the 1000cc Zed's and GS thou's, though more revvy and not as bullet proof.

CB1100R is full of win, but too expensive to buy and restore though!

Up the nae sayers buy it anyway mate, get the man that's done 100 repairs on these things to fix it it for you

Mind you I am easily pleased and did think that a VT125 was the dogs balls, so pay no attention to me.

Hi everybody, thank you for all answers. Have been away for a while and it has been a pain to find this thread to post a reply !

Since then I have been thinking a lot and of course I don't need a pain of a bike, first I need a bike that starts and run everyday.

As it has been said by wr6133, the xjr would be the perfect bike for me as I just love its style but correct me if I'm wrong, isn't 1200 way too big to ride in a city like London ?

Otherwise I was thinking of a phazer, I also saw the GSX 750, CB 750 why not. And what about Xtz Super Tenere 750 ? Any advices or suggestions ?

Old VFRs from the 1990s are pretty cheap these days, if you can find one that's been looked after.

The early Hinckly Triumphs are built like brick shit houses but for £2.5 you could be looking at a nice Sprint-which will do the job perfectly.

I bought my Blackbird for very little money and these go on forever too.
