You're about 2 year too late for it to be profitable.

Bitcoin mining is a computer hardware arms race, those USB miners are absolutely worthless.

As to the question of can you do it, it being getting a couple of USB sticks and plugging them in, only you can answer that. Thumbs Up

I think the way most it gets done is loads of ASICs, then rent a place and leave without paying the electric bill, not too dissimilar to weed production.

It's such a waste of energy and computing power. Any digital currency should put the computing power into something useful.

If you're not paying for the electricity then is 100% profit.

I doubt you'd ever break even if you're paying for the electricity prices and using something as slow and inefficient as a xeon.

As an example

processor MHash/J
Core 2 Duo E7300 = 0.11
Xeon E5530 = 0.09
Core i7 980x = 0.15

ATI 5970 = 2.20

AntMiner U1 = 800
NanoFury = 800
AntMiner S5 = 1956

Were did you point your miner to get those riches from?

Oh, those hash rates are meaningless without knowing what algorithm they're for. Wink

Did you not read the posts above? You will use a magnitude more in electricity than you would earn from the bitcoins.

"Bitminter" as its just a java app an is click an go

yep read all that but just wanted to see what would happen if it I let a machine try

suppose if you were just to leave machines running an forget about them (an if your not paying for power etc) then its a win - but will take forever to earn anything

as others have said, you are 2 years too late.

This was what was being used last year to do bitcoin mining by miners in China. Even now that hardware will no longer have the grunt to give a decent return.

Make a loss more like

BPMC Red Fury USB $33.87 (if you can find one)
Appx. BTC Earned Per Month = 0.00077463

Mind you $430 gets you a Spondoolies Tech SP20 Jackson that will give you a whooping 0.46477508 a month Laughing

They're ballpark figures, they give an idea of the orders of magnitude of difference of the computing hardware for hashing. In this case those figures are for two iterations of SHA256, but other mainstream hashes are similar enough in computation time (e.g Whirlpool, RIPEMD). The only big difference would be something like scrypt, but that's not really a hash function, it's a password derivation function.
