After a 5 month process ive just today been offered a start date which im really excited about.

I know there has been quite a big recruitment drive for these roles and wondered if there is anyone on the forum currently applying or already working for BG?

Having them fitted in every home by 2020 is an incredibly ambitious target, rather predictably the only thing that will happen by then is the big pot of money funding it will run out.

Well done on getting a job, it's no wonder companies go through long drawn out recruitment drives.
Too many kids leaving school without basic numeracy and literacy but they still want 30k a year.
Keep your nose clean and you'll do well within British Gas, take any opportunity they offer that comes with
training and you'll still be there when you retire.

It took a long time between stages of the application as i was waiting for a vacancy to arise. Passed the final assessment day in July and had put it down as a dead end until the call came today.

Ended up in an accounting job after leaving college in '09 which isnt going anywhere fast, but with a mortgage, daughter of nearly 18 months and a pregnant fiancee, i couldn't afford to be out of work while i pursued a career.

Im more happy about the training than the job to be honest, leaving a lazy to desk job to learning the gas and leccy trade is what excites me the most as i know now i have the chance i will make the most of it and turn it into a career, with or without British gas.

I'm just on the gas portion of the training now mate. You should get the full £24k after 27 weeks but the last 6 weeks are all dependent on your performance so it could be longer

Usually you do 4 duals/ jobs a day (a dual is a gas and a smart meter) but you could do any number of single dumb meter work or off supplies. The targets aren't hard to meet and from what I understand you'll only be given 2 duals a day once you first leave the academy until you find your feet

Yeah they put you up in a hotel, breakfast and tea are paid for but dinner isn't. They're really sound with childcare and family things so if you speak to them and say you want to spend every Wednesday night at home to help out with your kid they'll be fine. And of course you get to drive home for zero cost to you as it will be in your van
