Anyone been to an interview before or work for them? 200 mile round trip just to get to the interview place for me alone, but the job seems quite interesting (service delivery engineer) and training is provided.

The plan is just to write down answers of common questions so I can answer confidently (where do you see yourself in 5 years etc.), along with questions for them, which I have quite a few of really, but I find in interviews they answer them as they go along talking about the company and role. Currently a multi drop driver so there is some experience they would be interested in, time management, customer skills, working outdoors in all weathers etc. etc. also have a networking degree although quite dated now, still, better than nothing I suppose, shows I have a genuine interest.

BT are the biggest load of cunts I've known. If you like the job where you are actively disappointing your customers, then this job is for you.

I used to work for them as an engineer took redundancy package from them years ago.

Decent company to work for. Make sure you buy as many shares as you can. Made some decent money from that.

But don't expect it to be a job for life anymore thats all I can really say.

I worked with BT open reach many moons ago via an agency
I was the "North of Scotland" field engineer, this could mean a trip from Glasgow to Banff to replace a network cable
or even to install software from a CD when the users laptop didn't have a CD drive Rolling Eyes

really depends on the role, service delivery engineer covers a lot of area's (Esp when you work for BT)

The one positive I have to say about BT is that the engineers i've had have all been excellent, one of them particularly being the most helpful dude ever.

Say you'll be there in the morning, then post a card through their letterbox at 5 in the evening saying that they weren't in when you called and leave a contact number.

That way they'll know you're perfect for the job

when thats happened and I'm asked if i have questions I joke "I did have but you've answered them!" which usually gets a smile and buys time for me to think of any questions i could ask

Always always ask questions. If you don't you come across either disinterested or dumb.

How would you describe the ethos of the company

What are your guiding principles

What differentiates the best engineers from the average engineers and what support do you provide to help me become one of the best

Remember some bullshitter from HR will be interviewing, so have some HR bullshit ready

Building for the future

Of course, it’s not just about maintaining the current network; we’re also investing £3 billion to upgrade it – and we’ve rolled out superfast fibre broadband to more than 22 million homes and businesses in the UK already.

We’re also working with Broadband Development UK (BDUK) to support the government’s ambition to have 95% of UK addresses in a superfast area by 2017. We’re currently extending fibre’s reach more than 50,000 homes a week.. For more information visit our superfast fibre website.

I read that the business is working with Broadband Development UK (BDUK) to support the government’s ambition to have 95% of UK addresses in a superfast area by 2017. Where would I fit in with this plan. I want to ensure that I'm aligned with the most important aims of the company

Ask about the contract, make sure it's full time permenant. I used to work for them (40 years) and when they were launching BT Vision a few years ago, they took on a lot of engineers, but they were only given short term contracts. Something to do with employment law, if you work for them for under a year, they can terminate your contract, without redundancy or notice.

Oh and be prepared to work on this sort of thing

Sfi engineers are the Bain of my week. I applied for them, done the weird test, but didn't get an interview. Maybe I knew too much, and not stupid enough.

Often we book sfi visits, and no one will bother to turn up, or they say they have, and no one was home, when in fact they were.

Would still take the job either way to be honest, they train you up regardless. I would jump through hoops and work all overtime etc. to try and get them to keep me on I suppose.

Them cabinets do look daunting but I'm sure after training and experience it's just another day at the "office" Thumbs Up

I work for another telecom's company who have similar exchanges... there a doddle to work on, it's just linking one exchange port to a distribution port. That wiring mess is just a mass of 'jumper' cables. Good thing with being an installer/fault man, the skills you learn can mean you can move between companies quite easily if you wanted to. Best of luck with your interview as well.

Ask me again in a few months after training Embarassed

One thing I am a bit stuck with at the minute is leaving my current job, it's the only job I've ever had so it's all new to me. I have my notice all written up but I haven't "signed" the Openreach contract yet (it's sent via email at some point) as they need to carry out criminal record check and all that stuff. I want to hand it in ASAP so I have a few weeks off before training but at the same time I would sleep better knowing I 100% have the job before handing my notice to my manager. My family say I'm being daft and should just hand it in anyways. They require 1 week so it's good in that respect.

ah the cams frame,we got all of em taken out in my area.
but now we have new boys trashing cabs because they have poor training and no understanding of how stuff works.
but on a plus side we have contractors from kellys and quinns and as long as they have access to our network we will always have plenty of work.about 30% of faults i go on are caused by thier "work".
my interview question was "why do you want to work for bt?"
my answer,"ive always wanted to be seen in a yellow van"(we had yellow vans and maureen lipman back then).
i got the job.
bottom line is ,it still beats working for a living.

Make your resignation letter extremely short.

Any BS about thank you for the job, pleasure to work for you etc can be all verbal. Think of your resignation letter as a contract termination letter.

Sir

Please accept this letter as notice of termination of my employment. My last working day will be x

Regards

Absolutely don't hand your notice in until you have the letter from BT
