I have just passed my CBT yesterday also I have never driven a car before either so I am completely new to the roads. I have a few questions that may seem a bit stupid. If I turn up at a bike dealership out of the blue can I sort out road tax and insurance there and then and drive away with the scooter on the same day? Also from what I have read its a legal requirement to have road tax at all times even if I keep the scooter in a garage do they give you a grace period of a few days If I have my bike delivered to me I do I need to sort out road tax on day one?

When I bought my last bike the dealer taxed it on his PC in a couple of minutes. All I had to do was put in my details and CC number.

The only time you do not need tax is if you declare your vehicle sorn,at any other time you need to tax it.However,if you've just bought the vehicle,a couple of days to sort everything out won't be an issue.

thanks for the replies, and what about the insurance is this something that can be sorted out at the dealership while I'm waiting there? Also do new bikes generally come with some fuel enough to get it home or to the nearest petrol stop?

I'd sort your insurance out before you get there,it only takes a short telephone call to an insurer to get yourself up and running.....just look around first for the best deal.
You will get enough fuel in your bike to get yourself to a garage.

If you buy a new bike expect a "handover". Boring as, nothing (u new biker, so almost nothing) worth knowing, try and sell u some stuff too.

IIRC buying brand new, the dealer sorts it all out for you, I think they can even provide a two week insurance cover note.

Second-hand, choose bike, pay deposit, then go home and sort out tax & insurance online. It's safer than trusting the shop, and you'll gain an understanding of how the legalities work.

Hi,
be prepared to go into a dealers to hand over a lot of money & walk out, yes WALK out with just some paperwork.
these papers will contain all the relevant vehicle information YOU need to sort out insurance.
once you have sorted out & paid for (over the fone or on-line) the insurance THEN you can pay for road tax.
before you left the dealers, you should have been informed of what he needs to do to get the bike ready to ride away (maybe service it, fill it with fuel or fix any little things like change a bulb or whatever)
So if you have both completed all the relevant tasks, you will be able to walk back into the shop, helmet in hand (like a boss )pick up the keys, RIDE out & ...enjoy!

In my one and only experience it is possible to walk in and ride out on the same day, in fact took me a few hours the most time consuming part is waiting for the insurance to email the dealer / shop the insurance certificate... or at least was in my case.

Contact the dealer / shop in advance and agree a date to have everything ready by and then turn up with the monies and take out your quote, good as gold.
