Bristol people, can you help a fellow biker? I'm currently one of two possible contenders to become the conservative candidate for Mayor at the 2016 elections. The candidate will be chosen at an open primary next Monday (14th). Anyone who is registered to vote in Bristol can attend, you don't have to be a conservative member / supporter or even like us very much. The whole point is to have a range of views in the room.

My opponent is a wealthy businessman who is very much to the right of the party. I'm much more to the centre. To get the nomination, I need all the votes I can get! If you can spare a couple of hours on Monday evening to come along to the primary and vote (ideally for me!), it would be much appreciated. You need to register in advance to go along, and registration closes this Friday. Details on how to register are attached.

More about the story here. (I'm the one on the right.)

Thanks,

Steve.

Is the rich guy mates with Jacob Rees-Mogg? He too is wealthy, to the right of the party, and a BANES Tory.

I don't mind Jacob that much though, it's Annunziata who I can't stand.

You seem like a nice, decent chap and Lucas comes across as a ruthless, ambitious political animal.

Given that you're standing for the blue rosette party, this may not be as positive as observation as it might first appear.

Best of luck, I reckon you'll need it.

Here are my views......

What the bloody hell? Biker or not, you're a fuccuking Tory. I don't care if you're rich or not. Saying "Don't vote for the rich Tory."?

That's like asking turkeys to vote for Thanksgiving instead of Christmas.

Go boil your head.

What a load of spurious bollox, self interested, self-promoting, BS.

This is not the place for this.

Have some bleedin dignity.

OP fortunately I don't live in your area so I have no conflict with who wins wot. Smile but if it's any help best of luck.

There are too many whankers in politics and not enough room to name the prime suspects here.
I would vote for the best man even if it was not for the party.
I hope you make the town great.
Thumbs Up

I don't think it makes much real odds what party one votes for.

You're being asked to choose between two Tories, neither of which will win. You may as well send a working class Tory for the Tories instead of a posh Tory.

Wash your keyboard out Ste, I'm no labourite.

I'm closer to being a Tory than ever after the last couple of days (and I don't mean because we're taking in refugees but because call-me-Dave took decisive action and droned some Islamists idiots to death....yay! Encore!)

I just object to the OP implying he's a better Tory because he's got less cash than his rival Doh!

Oh yes, and I object to the fact that he has the nerve to ask here for support, help a fellow biker? OK, by all means, if you want help with your bike, but with your politics? Don't make me laugh.......

This is why all voting campaigns are a load of bollocks.

Vote for me because... I'm a biker and the other guy is more rich and he's more right wing because I say he is...?

Show us an official policy document or whatever it is that people in politics are supposed to show, to prove you're worthy of a vote. Don't just give us a news article where the best we can learn is that you like driving, motorbikes, craft beer and playing the piano...

This is just more popularity campaign bollocks.

I have been a bit surprised how many people I went to school with have been successful and influential in local government. (I mean like councillors).
Mostly these are just ordinary people it's all to easy to paint it as us and them. They are giving up a lot of time for little reward and often with the best of intentions. Most of the job is mind-numbing stuff like complaints about trimming bushes and unblocking drains; worse having to put up with professional whingers and complainers who would be aghast if anyone suggested do something themselves like pick up some litter.

So anyway good luck to him, a biking Mayor sounds OK of whatever 'colour' party, and hopefully won't overlook or disregard bikes altogether in any policy decisions.

I'm not claiming to be a better Tory (whatever that means), just one that's likely to attract more support in what is a predominantly left-wing city. A lot of people around here think that the tories are a bunch of posh rich boys who enjoy hurting poor people. I obviously think that isn't true (you presumably disagree), but the fact the stereotype exists means that selecting a rich posh person as our candidate is unlikely to win us many friends.
