I am getting a new (to me) van for my buisness, a car sized van.

However I was thinking...considering how many people ask on here for bike transport, would it be worth me getting a transit sized van and fitting it out to carry bikes as well as my boat stuff?

Idea or no?

My opinion I would only fit a Tow-ball for a bike trailer.

Van is good if shipping a bike on a ferry though. As the ferries charge by the centimetre etc.

I've got a car sized van already and will be shortly looking to get a bigger one for exactly the same reason.
Although a larger van for work will be handy too. I also often need to move 8x4 sheets and currently have to put
them on my roof bars. It's a pain in the arse.

The running costs of a Transit sized van are considerably higher than the running costs of a car sized van. Consequently, you're unlikely to make any profit from transporting maybe half a dozen bikes per year at 'mates rates.'
If a small van suits your needs then that's what you should purchase and run.

The mpg on my Kangoo 1.5dci seems pretty good, I can buzz around locally for a fortnight on 20 odd quids worth
and mines an old 03 model. Newer ones are no doubt even better. It's still over 200 quid a year to tax though.
Same engine in a Clio is 30 quid a year. It's all bollocks.

A standard sized tranny type van is a bit low to get bigger bikes in easily
unless its a light scoot or non faired with no mirrors.
A high roof lwb type is better but as said the daily running costs
probably won't justify bunging a bike in once in a blue moon.
A car/van that suits your business and decent sized trailer may be more versatile and economical.

Up until last year I had a short wheel base, low roof MK7 Transit... and I miss it!

Was cheap to run with euro4 tax and averaged around 30mpg despite me often driving it in quite a 'spirited' way Thumbs Up

It was FWD so had the lower loading in the back. Had a GPZ500 in there no problems at all.

Just something to note. A lot of insurance companies don't cover pulling a trailer on commercial insurance!

Thats a new one on me. How do haulage companies with articulated lorries get insurance then?

I think it depends on the terms of your individual policy.

You know your business wants to buy you a V6 vito. You owe it to yourself.

A transit size van would probably be a better buy especially if you went for an LPG one. Add a rear loading ramp like one of these and loading bikes or any other kit won't be a problem. They aren't cheap but they make things very easy. A couple of front wheels clamps and you could carry two bikes with ease.

With a transit you would have the option of fitting it out for your tools, small generator, a wash basin and even attached awning for those wet days by the river.

The side of a transit also makes for a great advertising space for your company as well.

Traditionally a minor or non-issue, but with the proliferation of ANPR average speed cameras, do bear in mind that LGVs have a lower speed limit than car-derived vans on both single and dual carriageways.

https://richardwillisuk.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/uk-national-speed-limits.gif

If the average cameras are actually switched on on the A9, then there may be quite a few transit drivers getting unexpected NIPs though for sticking to the "60" limit.

Interesting point but, do those cameras know the difference between a car and a transit? I suspect (though probably wrongly so) that they only kick in if a vehicle is travelling above the speed limit of the actual road and not the limit of said vehicle.

Forgive me if I'm being nievly stupid but, I lived in a land were such things are deemed as the devils work and not allowed. Except for the rare and occasional copper with hand held device.

Something else that you may need if using your vehicle for hire or reward is an operators licence.

You could go for something middle of the road. My (dad's) Peugeot Expert fits a bike nicely. It's a touch on the tall side to get the bike in but we've had no real problems so far. Had the old man's AJS in there no worries - and it's mahoosive.

Thanks for the replies and opinions.

I don't do large mileage for my business, usually most is local so I doubt it will be much more expensive to run from that point of view.

Will have to look into the comparable prices and insurance costs to see what the difference between small van and large van would be.

FOr speed cameras they probably can't see trailerised vehicles so 70 on the m/way will only be an issue if a PoPo person spots and records your speed.
I hoon at 68-ish on t' M/way with a trailer and have never had a NIP.
I don't use the lane next to the centre though as I'm a woos and wouldn't like to get nabbed for that shite.

As for taxation and APNR not sure how that works but I would guess it's pretty simple for the computers to talk to each other.

The same cameras pick you up for running without tax/insurance etc, so it's not a giant leap to assume NIPs will reflect
vehicle type.

don't quote with your own details. I have a Sprinter, and when I got insurance quotes I also went to see how much it would be with "hire and reward" use, for occasional weekend work etc. Anyway, it came out at a grand or so more, so I didn't bother. But, when I rang up Adrian Flux who where the cheapest for personal use only, they said "sorry, we can see you've run quotes for commercial use, so we can't sell you non-commercial insurance"

Didn't have it with anyone else, but Adrian Flux where considerably cheaper than the next cheapest, so it cost me a few quid.

You need a spammer email account to thwart those controls.
I was almost dun ahp the bahooky by an broker who used my 'test' quote details from comparison site for my actual policy. They'd used the 'rubbish' info I'd tested with in the statement of fact.
I had to fite them to change it as they wanted to charge mid-term adjustment. The policy I had bought was with correct detail and I picked the cheapest premium.
One must be careful.
