The V5 or 'logbook' shows who is responsible for taxing and insuring the vehicle, so effectively who owns it.
You wouldn't have been given a logbook as the seller/dealer should have sent it to the DVLA to get reprinted in your name but you should have seen the logbook, filled out and given a tear-out of the New Keeper Supplement that looks like this:

The new logbook should arrive in the post. ____________________ Yamaha FZ6 S2 |

this isnt sounding good so far....
any reputable car or bike dealer will know that you can no longer sell a bike with tax. they will also give you a new keeper slip as mentioned already.
get some advice from someone you know or someone who knows what they are doing asap.
anyway, what bike did you get? ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

I though online keeper transfer was live now? If it was a dealer would surely know that and favour that method
because in a manner of speaking you can then sell a car/bike/whatever with tax ready for the new owner to drive/ride
away that day.
Yup, thought so.
https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle
What's the betting OP has had the V5 assigned online and then taxed immediately afterwards when the name
change/address etc is on the 'system'?
I think I'm right in saying that the green tear off slip is null and void if this method of transfer to a new keeper is used. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

It appears that the DVLA computer get weekends, evenings and bank holidays off.
I only wish I were joking.
Anyway, weekdays, it can all be done online and the new keeper slip is essentially pointless now. So's the V5C itself, really, but baby steps. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Well, no it won't, because despite it being all computerised it can take days for VED and MOT statuses to update there.
I'm picturing some wheezy Taffy geezer wheeling a trolley full of tape reels down a dark corridor from one of their blinkenlight systems to another, every Monday. Except when it's a bank holiday. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
