Hello all,

Got a bit of an issue with my Transalp 650 brake light. The standard beam comes on with all the other lights, but the actual brake signal beam does not come on when I hit the brakes.

Tried a different bulb and no change. I am not brilliant with electrics really, so I was wondering if anyone might shed a light on what it may be?

Desperately want to avoid going to a garage as I'm penniless at the moment, but a little scared that it will prove more complicated to fix than I'm hoping for, and I hate running around when the bike isn't really legal...

Really appreciate any help or advice you can offer chaps.

So it doesn't work for either the front or rear brake levers?

No, neither, which is confusing. That makes me think that it's not either of the switches, and the juice is definitely getting to the bulb, it just won't do the second beam...

The suspension on my XL125RC, seems a bit hard at the front end, I've owned a couple of trailies previously so I know, roughly, what to expect and, IMO, the front end does seem a bit harsh. By this I mean that I can feel minor bumps in the road surface that I wouldn't be expecting to feel on this type of bike.

There's not a lot of info out there for this bike, however in the Haynes it, specifically, mentions the spacer that fits above the fork spring.
I have this on my bike, it's 50mm long, when you install this part it compresses the main spring by about 25mm.

I checked all the spring lengths when I rebuilt the forks and they were all well within the specs given, the bushes seemed ok as well.

I could try cutting some pipe to different lengths, to see if this improves things.

The preceding model of this bike did not use a spacer above the fork spring, it used a short spring instead, number 3 in this diagram:-

Previous model:-

Which would be the better solution, a different size spacer or the spring from the previous model?

The forks are air assisted, the Haynes recommends 4 PSI, currently I have no air in there, (I haven't got a low pressure gauge), surely adding air is going to stiffen the forks more than they already are?

Get a multimeter and start testing it is pretty simple to work out, where power needs to get too.

Inspect the bulbs by eye too you never know you may have gotten a duff one.

Also check the fuses I wouldn't have thought it'd be on a separate fuse but you never know.

Bulbs are fine, fuses checked and OK.

I'm embarassed to say that I wouldn't know what to do with a multimiter. That would have to be a garage job I think, if it comes to that kind of diagnostic.

Any other thoughts from anyone?

Do you hear a click coming from the microswitch at the front brake lever?

Have you adjusted the rear brake light switch (that might be in your owners manual)
