A mate of mine was driving home from Wales in his car following two others when three fully leathered 'serious' riders on quick Jap bikes came up behind them. They had a couple of semi-stabs at overtaking when some cheerful soul on a Burgman blitzed the lot.....bikes and all three cars then buggered off into the distance.....love to have seen that meself.

IMO what people look like and ride bears no relation to how fast they go. I drove from Northumberland to Halifax on Sunday in my old pope-mobile fully loaded with camping gear, er'outdoors and kids and on a journey that took 3.5 hours was only overtaken by two bikes - a CBRRRRR600RRRR and a CBRRRRR1000RRR. It is a sad indictment of today's motorcycling community that on the A1 in particular I overtook many, many big bikes...

Depends if they were in a group they might not want to get split up so potentially leave the overtaking to a really clear spot where they can all do it at once.

Personally I do this I will ride more defensively and slower in group riding. When I'm on my own however I will ride faster and take more chances. I overtook four "fast" bikes (R1,GSXR, ZXR) on my old K on the Brecon road coming to Abergavenny. They were in full leathers "serious* as well.

as a student I had a clapped out old road racing bike that my dad bought in 1963 and was only 5 speed

in jeans and t shirt I used to occasionally upset the local racing club by overtaking them on training rides...

Based on the crowds in my local biker cafe, a higher percentage of the riders are older chaps, fairweather types. Suppose they're happy just to have a quick bimble before they get home to the wife for tea.

Having the kit and the sportier bikes doesn't translate to the skill of using them I guess. A good rider on a less capable bike will pants a less skilled one on something better any day of the week. About six months ago after I'd not long had my Fazer I had a fun little duel with a fellow on a Triumph, I couldn't say which. Cruiser type, and he definitely gave me a run for my money on the B roads... Very Happy

Is it your position that quick bike + leathers must always mean "out for a hoon"?

Perhaps they were just enjoying the scenery that day.

The only quickness I can see here is how fast you made an assumption. Tut Tut

Plainly 'talking the talk' and 'walking the walk' is more a matter of ego.
