Parking on ticketed streets

Hi,

I'm relatively new to this, I've been riding for about a year on a CB125 and have my test booked next week...Anyway what I'm trying to find out is when you're on a bike and you need to park and there's only space available on a ticketed street how do you overcome this obstacle.

Park anyway without a ticket? Purchase a ticket but don't display it (cos where can you display it)? Park on the path? If the traffic warden gives you a ticket, where will he put it??

What do other people do in this situation? Confused

It depends on the local authority, some allow bikes free of charge in pay and display bays, others don't allow bikes at all.

Check the LA's website for information.

It's also worth remembering that some roads can lie in or across LA boundaries and have different parking regulations.

the town I live near has a policy of bikes not needing to buy a ticket, however they do ask you to park considerately and obey time restrictions.

private car parks are a different matter.

hospital car parks are something else

I got a telling off for not having a ticket on my bike in a hospital car park in Manchester (visiting wife and newborn) he hadn't put a ticket on it yet

I firstly asked how he knew I had not bought a ticket since they don't have a sticky bit on anymore and then politely pointed out that the rules on the sign clearly stated "find space before buying ticket" and since I hadn't found a space (patch of wasteland at edge of car park) I therefore had not fulfilled the criteria for buying a ticket.

I then pointed out that the instructions for after buying a ticket were to display it in my windscreen, again, no sticky to do so and also no windscreen just a bit of black plastic wind deflector.

by this point I'd gotten bored and was on the bike so went home, 2 years ago and nowt came of it.

in Bedford Borough there is loads of paid parking zones, bikes are exempt, though you are supposed to park "perpendicular to the kerb"

trying to get a straight answer out of anyone from Luton or Dunstable council was impossible, the person I spoke to from Dunstable seemed to relish giving me literal answers to my questions with a view to being as unhelpful as possible

I never have worked out where to park a bike in Luton, so I pay a lot of money, and invoice my employer on expenses

Got to got to Aldersgate soon. Train shame. Embarassed

Just can't face dicking about, lost in a one way system looking to park.

Check the notices for the parking rules. They are normally at the machine or about 6' up a lamp post or a designated parking pole.
Don't risk it if you are on a bike the Vultures love sticking it to bikes. Twisted Evil

Don't pay. I post this on all parking threads.

What I've been doing for the last couple of decades is park on a yellow line and remove my number plate and tax disc. The parking officers can't issue a ticket without your registration. The frame number is of no use to them because they don't have full access to the DVLA database. (A local warden showed me his terminal the other day.) They will only get your bike removed if it's causing an obstruction. N.B. On the pavement can count as obstruction.

I've tested this theory over and over again in Lambeth and Westminster. In other areas you might want to wait and see what the parking officer does before leaving your bike. If the local policy is severe they can call a car removal truck. They add slings to the crane so it can lift bikes. I understand they do this in the City of London. But in Lambeth and Westminster the officer just walks on by and doesn't make a record of your bike.

A parked bike with no number plate can attract attention from the police. It doesn't seem to in London, they're just too busy. UNLESS the bike's next to a potential terrorist target. This happened to me once - I parked somewhere really stupid.

Some police know where to look for a frame number, so theoretically they can get the bike's DVLA record checked over the radio and write you penalty notices for the parking and for no number plate. And if they've bothered to do all this they will probably be nitpicking traffic officers who will check your tyres, MoT, insurance, tax AND get your bike removed. This has never happened to me. But I could imagine it happening somewhere quiet where the police aren't busy.

Worthing Hospital, last time I was there, bikes had to pay £1.

Sign said visit ticket office, which was a shed, bloke took £1 off me, and then told me to ride around the barrier. No ticket, no receipt.

Didn't pay again.

This thread is depressing. Everybody wants to pay up, nobody but me removes their number plate. So much for the rebellious biker! I honestly can't remember ever paying to park a bike. Bike parking always used to be free, and bikes on yellow lines were always tolerated by police traffic wardens. That's the way it should be - we take up so little space. The thieving councils who've brought in zero tolerance for bikes on yellow lines, and pay and display bike bays and residents parking permits for bikes...they can all fuck right off, they're not getting a penny from me.

Surely removing the number plate whilst being on a public road is illegal? Can't the bike get removed by the police/council?

If you end up having to buy and display a ticket stick it to your screen and take a couple of mobile phone pictures of it in situ on your screen with a close up showing the time, date and amount paid. If the pay and display machine isn't working record yourself on your mobile phone putting your money in and the machine rejecting it. Appeal any ticket and take your evidence to PATAS / TPT, win.
