Paypal question (not the usual)

Dear BCF, Quick question with regard to Paypal as I can t seem to find the answer when googling...

Basiclly, im currently down about £100 with, currently, nothing to show...

Saw a guy on ebay advertising a bike breaking, I made an offer for some parts which was accepted, we exchanged paypal details by phone, I paid (Goods/ Services, not a gift).

Here's where it starts getting complicated.

I bought the parts by PayPal only not through eBay, using the wonderful Payal app on my smartphone (I even added a couple of quid towards the paypal fee as Im nice like that).

The app simply gives you the option to enter the email adress you want to send funds to, the amount, and some comments. I fill in the boxes.

I add some comments saying what Im paying for (To keep a record as Ive only got a text conversation so far)

I text buyer and say paid, I also send my delivery address by text address.

Sller says thanks and a few days later says theyve sent item.

Nothing turns up

I contact seller asking for tracking, Seller is reluctant to give (Unknown reason why) me but offers to ring Royal Mail customer services

A few more messgaes back and forth

I raise a Pyapal dispute.


Simple so far.

Anyway, I check the transaction and realise that Paypal has put my delivery address to one I havent lived at for 2 years. Great.

I text seller and ask which address it was sent to.




So, now I guess it leaves me with the following:

Either

Seller never sent,
Seller sent to wrong address.


So, first step is to knock on door of old house (10 miles away) and ask if they've seen it / still have it (or have let someone else have it...). If the seller gives me the tracking I can even go to one of the local sorting offices and try and see if its there. Ive still got some documentation with my name on the old address.

Possibly problem solved

As far as Im concerned I was clear to where it should go in the messages which were acknowlegded and responded to by seller, and had the seller given me the tracking number when asked this whole mess up may have been discovered earlier (assuming they did send it).

So my questions are:

If RM have allowed someone else to have it, I guess the only resolution is for the seller to claim against RM & refund me / I claim against Paypal buyer protection?

Would buyer protection side with me given the address mess up? I bet Paypal would deny any responsibility themselves (for a carp app).

If RM do have it will they let me have it? Ive got no "something for you" card only some ID saying i live at another address and an old Payslip with my old address. (Will I need the tracking number to even find out?).


If the seller did send the items, He's now likely thinking Im trying to scam him

First of all you need to establish which address he sent your parcel to, if it turns out that he sent it to your old address then you are going to have to bear some of the responsibility for not keeping your details up to date. Like it or not, that's why PayPal has address details, so that senders can be sure that parcels ard being sent to the owner of the PayPal account, rather than them being paid for with a random hacked account.

Secondly, did he send it via a tracked service? Has he given you tracking details? If yes, then get on to the courier/Royal Mail or whoever it is.

You need the answers to these questions to proceed.

You can't delete old address details from paypal. It has numerous serious bugs regarding address management.

It looks like you have deleted them, then they reappear as an option if you pay using paypal through a website.

While not showing on my actualy paypal account when I log in directly. If I order stuff from, say, wemoto, every address or permutation of an address I've ever dispatched something to via paypal is presented as an option. Even ones I've not lived at or used for 5 or more years. It also persists in putting my home, not work address in as my primary one if using a site other than ebay even though I've set the work one as default.

So, not at all surprised there has been a dispatch cockup. They happen all the time.

The big problem here is that it's not going to be the sellers fault.

Your issue is with PayPal, regardless of what you put in your comments, the Seller is told at various stages he has Seller Protection ONLY if it is sent to the PayPal address.

Now got tracking number, delivery has been attempted to my old address.

It's now sat in a depot near me, so I'll see if I can convince them to let me have it... Should be fun...

When you go to the post office take ID, and if you can take something form your old address and your current one. Also take records of the Paypal mess-up. Try the easy route of just collecting it (though it'll probably fail without the card) and if that doesn't work you have back-up evidence. You might do well to swing by th eold place and just ask for the non-delivery card.
