Hey guys, I might be buying a bike today from a private seller about 15 miles away from my house, I just wanted to ask if its possible to ride the bike back to my house?

And could you please explain the steps I need to take before doing that (if it's possible)

Remember it 'expires' soon as a change of keeper 'triggered', now.
If bikes taxed when you collect, probably 'OK' for a few days, but will need re-taxing as soon as DVLA flag the switch.

If you already have insurance you will be covered for third party risk only but it's best to call the broker and confirm.
They will normally charge for mid-term adjustment if it's a very cheap premium. Some outfits don't charge for this. Unless the vehicle is a higher bracket. Bigger engine, newer etc.

Check that it's roadworthy.

Check that it has an MOT: https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk

Insure it. The instant you pay for it, it's your bike and not covered by any "other bike" cover on any existing policy. Technically you're not covered until a certificate of insurance is "delivered", including electronically. If it's not on the MID then you'll want to have that certificate to hand.

The seller will fill in your details on in Section 06 'New Keeper Details' on page 02 of the V5.
The seller should give you Section 10 'New Keeper Details' from Page three of the V5 (Logbook) (It's not been the called a log book since the 70s. Smile )
You will need a valid and current MoT Test Certificate for the vehicl if more than Three Years old.

He will/should (but some folk don't) send his part/s of the V5 to DVLA that notifies DVLA of the change of KEEPER with your details as the new keeper. (Not OWNER)

You should ask for a 'bill of sale' or you should make a bill of sale yourself and have the seller sign and date. This is helps in legal claims.
Proving ownership is not straight forward.

You can tax the vehicle at a Post Office using the New Keeper slip, as the vehicle details are shown on there.

You will need the V5/C2 (your strip/bit of the V5).
The Valid MoT Certificate.
Valid Insurance Certificate that shows there is current insurance cover for the vehicle.

You should also get the owner's manual for the vehicle.

The Service Record.
This normally can include invoices for any repairs and modifications.

If the bike has an after-market exhaust that should be supplied too.
The seller should not ask for £££ for this as a dealer would not offer anything and can reduce the offer price if OEM exhaust is not available.
An After market system may in deed be better than OEM but dealers are stuffy. Smile

If the seller is fully legal on the bike and you decide to buy it, why not see if you can do a deal where by he rides it over to your house. Easy solution and problem solved all in one.

You see the odd bike on the bay with tax on but from what I understand you have to have tax in your name now ?.
When I went for my bike it still had 2 months on so I did ride it home but got tax next day..
It was late as well when I went for my bike , M25 nightmare , so for an hours trip took 2 and half hours..
Yeah anyway I did not see the harm in riding it home , yes I did take out insurance that did before I picked it up..
I know you can take out tax online if the logbook is in your name , can you still do it online if its not ?..

So I wonder did you get the bike ?.

You can now tax on line using the 12 digit ref. number under the New Keeper details box on the V5C/2 New Keeper Detail slip/tear-off from the the previous keeper.
