It mentions from inside your car a few times, they'll probably still get upset if you whip out your phone on the forecourt.

Do you mean leaving your helmet on while you fill up ?, I was chatting about this a week or so ago..

I always leave my helmet on and my face mask , I never take it off and never been asked to , I see signs all the time to take off your helmet..
I asked on the post if anyone had been asked to take off there helmets and no one replied..

However I have been asked to get off my phone on the forecourt so it is ok to use an app on there now , I like that idea Very Happy

Can anyone use this service?
If you have the Shell Motorist app or the PayPal app then you can use Fill Up & Go. For safety reasons, motorcyclists should not use the service. If you want to pay with a fuel card, or want to redeem fuel vouchers, then unfortunately you also won’t be able to use the service.

Never been told to take my lid off or to get off the bike when I'm filling it. I must just have sincere, honest looking eyes
and display a firm grip on my nozzle..

Only ever been asked once and that was at our local 24h garage at 05.00 in the morning. 3 of us used to meet there on a Sunday so we could do the Leeds-Helmsley-Scarborough run with no traffic.

The chap explained that his boss made him pay for any losses due to people leaving without paying, and that he needed our faces to be recorded on camera for this reason. Fair enough. I explained that we had been coming here for years, hadn't ridden off without paying yet and that in reality he was at greater risk of people in cars and particularly vans 'doing one' as £75 of diesel is more attractive than £20 of petrol. I asked what kind of vehicles the hand-written list of reg. nos. behind the counter related to, and to his credit he said 'cars, vans and one scooter'. No big bikes then? I asked. 'No' came the reply.

By this point my mates had arrived, and he was still insisting that helmets be removed. We declined, advised him that we wouldn't be using the petrol station again and took our business elsewhere, me making it on fumes.

He won't care. I do as it means I have to get the bike out the night before now to fill up which is a bind. Nose/face springs to mind...

ffs this place is like a time machine, this exact subject including app got discussed only a month or so ago

I've been leaving my helmet on to fill up for the past 2 years, the Asda near work, the one near home and the morrisons in the middle don't give a flying fuck if you're wearing a helmet, clown suit or whatever if you're using the pay at pump, they have your money before you can start taking fuel

the one near home doesn't even have any staff it's fully pay at pump

If you're that fussed about keeping helmets on embrace the automation.

I get my phone out every time I fill up, never had even the slightest moan/gripe because of it.

And yet you are allowed to dump 20litres of highly flammable liguid above a nice warm engine on which a slight spillage/overfill could very well mean curtains for you.
I believe that the average motorcycle coil poses far more risk than whatever grief a mobile is likely to cause....

Mobile phones have never caused explosions near petrol pumps because they don't emit enough power to create a spark. Scientific fact.

From https://blogthinkbig.com/why-is-the-use-of-mobile-phones-at-petrol-stations-prohibited/

Quote:
The only way that a mobile phone could generate a spark at a petrol station would be due to a defective battery, which is unlikely and could also occur in the case of the car’s own battery.

According to a report from the Petroleum Equipment Institute, there are no documented incidents at petrol stations related to fires or explosions caused by the use of mobile phones.

It's the risk of dropping the phone and the battery popping out/shorting against something. But yes, pretty unlikely and it smells like a knee-jerk rule generated back-in-the-day for reasons unknown.

There is normally a period of 'Radio Silence' during industrial Blasting operations.
There is some notion that a radio can set off the charges.
In modern blasting cord it needs a sophisticated device to trigger the cord. The cord is like a thin plastic tube with a coating of cordite on the inner surface. The igniter lights a flame which propagates along the cord to a blasting cap in the initial charge which hammers the main bulk charge. That can be TNT/Semtex/Dynamite used to set off s Diesel fuel and fertilizer charge. Nothing between the igniter and the charge is radio sensitive.
Perhaps many years ago electric blast cord was used which the safety Nazis were crying about the chance in ten million. Sad

The reason there is that 'radio silence' is only for communications purposes.
To control the area needs several people over a wide distance and they use radios to confirm to the blasting Supervisor that the area is clear.
Someone nattering away on the radio interferes with the control of the security in the blast area.
Military ops. probably use a similar procedure but they'll just shoot any fucker who ignores the radio silence. Cool

I use my phone at the pump sometimes but have had a bawling from a 60-day Hagg-Lady for doing it. I finished my call and fucked off to the petrol station across the road. Caaaaunt. Twisted Evil

Never run near empty if you have any principles. Wink

I had the pump switched off on me a couple of months back while filling up. The female attendant/cashier was flapping her arms about and mouthing something from behind her glass window (obviously had no mic/speaker system or she didn't know how to use it).

When I went over to see what the problem was, she told me I wasn't allowed to fill up while sitting on the bike Confused (She never mentioned anything about my lid though, which was what I was expecting. )

I explained that it is difficult to fill up properly if the bike is leaning on the sidestand and this way you can keep the bike upright. May as well have shown a card trick to a dog.

Ended up giving her the few quid I owed and went to fill up elsewhere. A few weeks later I was running low but, seeing as I'm a stubborn git I carried on past to fill up at the asda a few miles away. I ran out before I got there but, would probably do the same again Folded arms but, hope to make it. Laughing

Now this one makes sense (or so I'm led to believe). It's got something to do with static electricity build up and that by getting off and touching something you basically degauss yourself. Check out youtube for motorbike that turn into fireballs at fuel/gas stations!!!

My guess it it's to offset the risk of a soaking by petrol.
It burnzyerbaws when they get to swim in it.
Public liability would go mental.
I just hop off.
BMWs are a hoe-er to fill due to the Safety Nazi (Real Nazis) Kitten-Safe filler necks. I have mine modifikated too but they still fill slow.
It gives me more time to shoogle the bike around and let air out.
Then I stand it up off the stand and lean it on my leg to top off. Not that much of a chore.
Nozzle in one hand, other hand on the bike (for safety). And being nocturnal (able to use both hands) helps I think.
I have spilled petrol out the tank and don't fancy getting it on my Haw Maws either.

All I can see is a more complicated pay at pump service.

Surely getting your card out from your wallet/purse is a lot easier?

I remember seeing Mythbusters do an episode on mobile phones on forecourts years ago and they categorically proved that it's impossible to ignite anything with a cellular device.

Nothing but scaremongering and fluff. I always use my phone to take a picture of the mileage when I fill up (I use aCar app to track mpg and all that jazz) and have never once had anyone bat an eyelid.
