Hello all, apologies for the vertical video:

It's hard to hear over the engine, but it's definitely there. Sounds like a metal-on-metal vibration, can hear it more around the tail end of the bike as opposed to near the actual engine. Have felt around the exhaust mountings and it doesn't feel rattly, very sturdy.


Bike is on 10,200 miles, has had a recent oil change with some Castrol 4T, oil is very slightly above the limit, but it's been this way for about 5-600 miles with no problems.

Other than that it behaves normally. Haven't had a chance to test top speed recently, but it starts fine, rides fine, accelerates fine.

Any ideas guys? Bike hasn't had a valve clearance check or general service since 4,500. Calipers recently been serviced and as stated, oil changed.

Sounds like something is loose, but not in the engine. Are you sure everything is tight enough? Thinking

Valve clearences sound more clinking. Like a pair of keys on the ring. Well, you could check them though.

As I suspected - when we serviced the rear brake caliper we had to loosen the exhaust to get to the bolts etc, and then we loosened the fluid reservoir so we could unscrew the top (piston was stuck out until we took lid off)

Maybe something is loose.. It's weird because it only happens after a mile or so of riding.


Another sound that's strange, you know that spluttery sound when you're in too low of a gear? I get that now, but in addition to my normal healthy engine sound. I'm inclined to believe there's a small hole in my downpipe somewhere seeing as this is an outside bike. When pulling off or driving round in a higher gear I can hear it through helmet. But my rev counter could be anywhere above 5K.. so it's not like the bike is struggling is it?

I'll tell you what makes a weird sound, you know when you rock a bike back and forth like an idiot - hold front brake in, rev the bike and slowly release and then grip clutch, to make the bike kind of bounce back and forth on the suspension as the engine tries to move the bike...

I did this from time to time.. really rarely.. If I'm bored at a light. like, really really rarely.

A) Does this damage anything? Is it less than healthy?

B) I did this recently since I noticed the sound in my OP, and my bike sounded crap! Just really weird....

I have noticed that. The lower bolt that holds the shield on is so corroded that the shield isn't held in. This could very well be the problem. Thanks
