Hello Smile

My KLE 500 2007 with 35,000 klms.
I have noticed a knocking noise when the engine is cold when I take off.
Its like a deep tapping noise.
The bike does not do it when the engine is warm.
Is this something developing ?
Can I take the bike in to my mechanic for new big end shells ?

I welcome any advice or suggestions.

Thanks

Sure, you can, but let's not go straight to the nuclear option.

What kind of oil are you using and have you changed it recently?

I use semi blend 10w-40 good quality oil.
It has been changed about 1500 klms ago.
It does not knock after I get moving or under load above 2500 rpm.
Good when the engine is not.
I just have never noticed it before.

Thanks

''Good quality oil'' being? Thinking

Check the chain, could well be some dead links.

Balance the carbs, if that doesn't work look at the cam chain tensioner and if that doesn't work its the primary chain so ignore it unless you want to strip the bottom end.

I forget the brand, but its recommended and not cheap.
If your referring to the drive chain its not that, its got brand new chain and sprockets.
The noise I can hear is from the bottom end.
My klr 650 did the same thing but it was normal for the type of bearings.
Kle 500 has friction bearings witch are quieter and smoother, tell me if im wrong Razz
Its properly normal for this sound I just have never noticed it before.
If it does not get worse after a few klms I will not worry anymore.

Is it definitely not an exhaust/header gasket?

Do the easy things, then ignore it. If it's a big problem, it'll cost just as much to fix it now as it will to fix it when it fails.

No I am refering to the primary drive chain which is in the bottom end.

If the carbs are out of balance it tends to make the primary drive noisy.

Is this a new problem with a bike that used to be quiet?

It's a Kwak and they are renowned for having noisy engines.

Check valve clearances, balance carbs, check CCT and, as Robby has already said, ignore if no better.

Have you tried singing "lalalalalalalalalalala !" really loudly as you pull away?
Works for me.
