MX lid vs Road hat?

I have never owned a road helmet, I tell I lie, when I started riding I had an old black road lid from 1987! Then I bought a Wulfsport Prima about a month later, with the visor, then removed the visor because I moved up to the Varadero and by then the wind from 55mph compared to 35mph was battering it around too much, so put goggles on, since then I've had about 5-6 different MX lids.

After going to the Isle Of Wight with some of the BCF crew, I'd never noticed before, put I'd never put so much time in, in one go as getting down to Portsmouth, but the wind noise, even with plugs in is daft and my neck was aching on the Monday on the ride to work after 550 miles of wind pressure catching the peak.

I'm hoping to do a bit more road riding now I've got my CB400 and an MX hat is looking a bit strange and what with winter coming, I've done four years of cold faces, I'm thinking a road helmet is the way to go.

The thing is, I like how open a motocross helmet is, I don't like having my chin pressed up against the inside of the helmet, like with a road hat, and my vision seems more limited with a road helmet on, whether it is or not is a different matter.

I'm considering an adventure helmet with the peak removed is the way to go, like an Airoh S4, but then you're paying for the look of that style of helmet and then removing bits, which is daft.

TLDR; I want a road helmet with a chin bar further away than normal, but less so than an MX hat and a wide field of view, discuss.

I've found AGV's have chin bars that are a fair way from your face.

Shark Vision R has a very wide field of view but no pinlock instead relying on a vent system.
This one comes with a free pair of Kevlar jeans as well.

The Vision R's higher up the range including the carbon fibre one and a couple of others have inflateable
cheekpads and are also pinlock ready for the best of both worlds.

I knew that anyway, I was just wondering if there was any pointers in where to begin, there's so much choice. Do all road lids whistle, or just cheap ones? I have a Box helmet that's turned up from somewhere, I'd wear that but it's far too small, I don't know where it's come from, and that and the old black one both whistled and felt claustrophobic.

On Sharks, I've completely fallen in love with this monstrosity.

Your brave though asking for helmet advice on here though! Especially if your deviating from the usual Shoei/Arai full face norm.

Last time I asked about lids, I was told to stop being a fucking 10year old child!

Spada sting was cheap and usable. I'd recommend getting something more road based however...It is far nicer experience wise.

My shark speed R carbon is quiet and has reasonable chin/beard/tache room. Visibility plenty, visor usually wears tape because low sun.

It recently developed a fault with the chrome on the chin strap rivets flaking off, sent back under warranty. Wearing my HJC FG-15 which is quite noisy in comparison and the lining takes ages to dry out. Shark nice enough to send out a loaner helmet, same model, same size. Not quite sure what to make of that, although assured helmet was "extensively checked".

I used to have an Arai MX motocross helmet and I loved it. Don't remember any issues with noise or with wind under the peak. I rode it on adventure bikes with small fairings so maybe that made the helmet more comfortable.

AGV rx8 duel evo for the win. Removable peak, decent visor, MX style chinbar (in fact, shares the same chinbar with agvs MX lid so if you want to swap the chin vent for the MX mesh one you can)

I was looking at AX8 Duals last year, along with Airoh S4's and another pointy looking Dual Sport helmet with the ability to remove the peak and make a smart looking road helmet as well as wear goggles under the visor.

I'm going to have a nose around in Bikers World next weekend and try some lids on, then get onto the web and get them for more monies cheaper!

ive been running a dual evo with the peak removed for the last year or so and the only fault I can think is the visor detent mech has broken on one side, I am pretty rough with it though.
