Just having a night shift debate on NFC chips. My work pass card appears to have one for use in vending machines/canteen. People have complained that their phone battery is drained rapidly if they keep the card in the same pocket with the NFC communication turned on.

The question is this:
My phone has NFC coms. Card has a balance stored via NFC chip. Theoretically, there may be a way to edit the balance on the card? Expecting a no, but would be nice, legalities aside.

A quick google returns this
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/35841/can-i-clone-my-mifare-classic-access-card-with-an-android-device

I would like to try it out and explore it a bit further but I don't have anything to test it with.

Does your badge actually store the balance, or is it just an ID that is read by the system which then stores the transaction on a central server?

The former would theoretically be possible to edit - though any half decent implementation would cryptographically sign the balance rather than just storing it as a straightforward number. The latter would potentially allow you to clone a colleagues card, but not add "free money" to your own.

What type of NFC chip is it?

Having had some sleep and done some readings, I don't think I can do it simply because Apple. iPhones don't use NFC the way it's intended, the phone acts as the card so it doesn't have the capability to communicate with a passive chip.
