How to stay dry?

I've got an Alpinestars Andes suit (this jacket and these trousers).

It's ok... but it does let in water on days like today. The main problem areas seem to be my forearms (the water isn't getting in between the glove and the sleeve, it's simply coming through the jacket), and the crotch area (which is a real bastard, as it soaks the crotch of my jeans underneath, making it look like I've had a little accident ). The crotch thing is especially annoying, as my shirt then wicks up the moisture during the day, and I get a steadily rising line of damp up my torso

What are my options?

- Try to get a refund and buy a new suit? I was tempted to buy a bonded Goretex Rukka suit first time around, but balked at the price. I'm not sure A* would give me a refund either...

- Waterproof the existing suit? Perhaps with something like Nikwax? I'm not sure how effective that will be, since it seems the moisture is getting more through the "lycra-like" parts than the "textile-like" parts of the suit.

- Buy an oversuit? If so, which one?

- Or do something else...?

I have waterproofs, always worked fine. Today they didnt, today is the worst I have ridden in - rain wise.

I should have worked from home - so I clicked 'other'.

Richa 2 piece. Jacket was fine, gots me a wet special place *points down*. Generic waterproof gloves failed massively too. I have a 1 piece suit but hate putting it on and getting out of it too. It is as big as I dared get but still so awkward when you have leathers on.

Richa Typhoon rain suit.

Sportsbikeshop have black and fluro, cost about 40 quid. Keep you dry, provide humour for people watching you put it on over your other gear...

Rainsuits are a PITA to get on and off and it
wasn't possible with boots on for me at least as for hopping around on one leg at the roadside in torrential trying to get the cunt on will be enough time to soak you. I had much better luck with a two piece before I purchased Rukka gear and I would still rather a car for the shite weather.

I bought an oversuit for my trip around Scotland. Was just a cheap Lidl one but it was brilliant. I got a size large (I'm a medium in all clothes, ever) so no issues getting it over my bike gear and it wasnt too baggy.

Also did a great job of keeping me warm as it kept the wind off.

One downside - its an all-in-one suit and doesnt fold up very small. I have a Hornet which has zero underseat storage, so if it took the suit it had to go in a tankbag

I had ‘waterproof’ Alpinestars textiles. Like you, I had leaking at the elbow joint and crotch. Wearing a one-piece is a total pain in the arse over textiles so I’d recommend buying a cheap mac and trousers on ebay/Amazon. Just put them on when the rain looks particularly heavy and they should provide the extra protection for the arm and crotch.

I don’t think Nikwax works, there are threads on here saying it’s useless.

my 1st bike gear was a dianese textile suit and 6+ years down the line its still fantastic in the wet.

even survived scotland where it rained for the entire day. 250+ miles later out in it and the only thing that was damp were my cuffs where my gloves that were tucked inside the jacket, were soaked (alpinestars 365s)

for every day i have some waterproofs i keep in the boot of the bike so if i've got my kevlar jeans on and that i can chuck those on to get home but if im out in real bad weather the textiles are fantastic.

personally, if they're meant to be waterproof and they're not i'd complain and get a decent set that is.

Are you sure it's water getting 'in' or is it water that cant get 'out'.

Keeping dry (in functional comfort) will cost you more than £500 for shelltex/Goretex garments.

You can wear prastic over-suits etc. but you will sweat and if the sweat can't get out you will get wet.

I was looking, once upon a time, at that drystar suit but really couldn't trust it because it didn't have goretex in the name.

I'd be demanding my money back, in the name it says drystar and WP, it doesn't keep you dry, looking like a star therefore isn't WP.

I found a IXS Goretex jacket on ebay for 90 quid in as new condition. I would suggest looking for similar items.

I have then Hein Gericke goretex trousers, which have always remained waterproof. I also have some Richa Goretex gloves, which have only been wet from sitting in a room while wet, as the water slowly evaporates, and can begin to evaporate through the Gtex lining.

I ALSO have a RST one piece rain suit too for over my leathers. That kept me dry riding through to wales for a full day so gets my double thumbs up. I managed to get it on at the side of a road on a bench in a minute, so it's not too bad. Give it a practise run at home before you venture out.

I have been using Goretex/Shelltex for years and I never get 'wet'.

The exposure time is a serious consideration for waterproof gear. If you only do a 30min commute then cheap shit may be perfik but for a long 1hr+ ride then cheap isn't cheerful.

I have also had to wear cheap prastic 'waterproofs' for work and suffered the consequences.
The Goretex work gear I wear is a million times better.

You will certainly get some water in as it is impossible to be water-tight without being airtight and those suits cost more. vvv

Best way I have found to stay dry is dont go for a ride in the rain. Works every time.
