So the bro in law gave me one of these projector thingeys.
It's fecking ace!

It has HDMI, USB, VGA, SD card etc.
So tempted to fire it up in the garden, and see how big I can project a bit of Porn hub onto the side of the house.

It's an NEC M230X 2300 ANSI Lumens XGA LCD Projector according to Google.

Picture looks wonky but it's just a trick of the image:

https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/12038127_10153696870678408_4191409430817582795_n.jpg?oh=f59228a4752c1ca29ae3faba32fe789b&oe=56994A20

Mine, Casio LED jobby, zooms massively, that's a 10ft projection from about 6m distance (excuse the imperial metric mix Laughing) It goes way smaller, and way way bigger. Good stuff.

We had projectors on the ships when I was at sea.

Bulbs used to blow for fun and were stupidly expensive.

Are they a lot cheaper now?

Bulbs blow if you do not shut down correctly.

Many a pounds is wasted in the NHS by management idiots turning it off at the plug, even when there is a note on the plug.

Causes the bulbs to overheat as the fan isn't spinning.

I have one too, bought from Nowhere Elysium on here. Love it. Combined with a bluetooth sound bar for loud sound output from the laptop.

It's a pretty basic one (can't remember the make) with VGA input but does the job well Thumbs Up Mounted on top of our living room cabinet. Size is a lot larger now than in pic below.

I picked up an Optoma HD141X (1080p) recently to replace my old 720p one. More than happy with the quality but the range of the zoom isn't the best. I could do with moving it a metre or so closer to the screen wall so it fits without using digital zoom. The image is just over 3m wide. It was about £400 on an Amazon sale.

Need a cheap place for Blurays now if anyone can recommend anywhere?

Been rocking one for the last 4 years. Made of win.

Equates to an 84" TV at this range.

Considering rocking a bigger screen (so wider than the chimney breast) because it's on maximum zoom just now. Picture will go twice as big just using the optics before I need to move the projector.

OP, buy a proper screen. Makes a huge difference to the image quality. I'm just using a simple manual "roller blind" type screen.

I use a projector also. Have done for the last 2.5 years now. Would never own another telly, given how cheap the projectors + bulbs have become. Much easier to hide on the wall too instead of having a telly as a central focus point in the room. Granted, I always like it when I go onto a decent television at a friends house but nothing beats 100"+

I really want to install a decent projector in my house. I've included it in the plans... i've wired up some hdmi's/coax/speaker cables to a projector point - just need to buy the fucking thing now.

Any advice out there on screens / projectors?

In the museum we're going laser/LED on all of our new stock. They really are the way forward. I'm not sure if the cheaper home brands have picked up on the technology yet and I reckon our Casio and Panasonics are well out of the range of most people, but honestly I recommend aiming that way if it's a possibility.

Yeah they're great. Smile

Use a Benq W700 @ 120" diagonal. Makes 3D films actually worthwhile. Smile

I have had a couple and they are awesome and I will get another at some point but the only issue is bloody sunlight. Unless you have a blackout room or a room not facing the sun with a decent heavy curtain, daylight ruins it.

Winter was awesome because it was dark by the time I got home so had no issues then.

What about lighting in the home?

It's pretty much an all lights off jobby for the most part.

Contrast ratio being very important. You see some cheap ones that look amazing until you see the contrast ratio.

Mine looks good during the day with the curtains drawn or at night with one light on in the back half of the room.

Even better fully blacked out but I like to be able to see what I'm eating.

It depends on the projector. One of mine was much better than the other. I could play Gran Turismo on a 100" screen in the evening and still have the room light enough to do most normal tasks like rolling a spliff or masturbating etc.

The way to think about the lighting is that the blackest black your projector can manage is the colour of the screen you're projecting onto (which is white).

In an absolutely dark room, that will be pitch black. Anything else, the other colours have to be very bright for the black to appear black. The brighetr the other colours, the better your picture will look.

The concept that the base colour of the screen is the darkest black a projector can show seems to give a lot of people real difficulty. Even when you show them.

They seem to think it somehow projects darkness. Neutral

LMAO. I like it when people are honest about their hobbies. Very Happy

I'd love a projector but the thought of rewiring everything makes me feel ill. I'd need minimum of 3 HDMI devices hooked up to it, so either the projector would have three or I'd need a switching box I take it.
