Crying or Very sad

Yup... Dropped my Nice shiny 53 Bandit 1200. I'd been working on it all day doing valves and carb balance and thought I'd take it for a quick spin to make sure all was good. Went and got me gear on, back out to the bike and remembered I haven't lubed my chain for a couple of weeks so I'll give it a wax coating before I go out.

Went to put the bike on the center stand. Now.. It's a lump of a bike but I've done this many a time without issue.

This time though, I lost balance and felt the bike edging away from me. I held on for as long as I could but eventually had to let go.

I heard a lot of cracking followed by shattering of plastic. Naturally I thought the worst. I managed to pick the bike up and started looking at the inevitable damage. First thing I noticed was the indicator had smashed off taking the bulb and housing with it. My break leave end had snapped off. A few small dents in my exhaust and scuffed up fairing on the corner.

All in all, not as bad as I'd expected and I'd say the worst part is the faring scuffing because I'll probably need to re-spray it.

Still not sure how I managed to drop it. I can only put it down to tiredness and rushing.

My last bike (RF600) I did pretty much the same thing with the same sort of damage. I thought I'd learned my lesson and would never drop another bike again.

Gutted.... Crying or Very sad

Thanks for listening.

I'm guessing because it's top heavy and weighs a quarter of a tonne? Thinking

Pound shop paint, "dropped by previous owner" when you sell it. Worse things happen at sea.

I always make sure that I can let go of it while just resting my foot on the centre stand before actually lifting it, as a "balance check" kind of thing, that hasn't failed me yet.

I managed to drop the thing while taking it off the centre stand early on, now always make sure I have the front wheel pointed away from me while taking it down so if it does go it leans towards me.

Hi Gaz , its funny as I was thinking just yesterday , I wonder if he fixed his bike.
I am sorry to hear you dropped ya bike Confused , its horrible , I dropped a brand new bike a few years back , less than a year old.
I rode on to the drive and for some mad reason I thought I have put the side stand down , I got off the bike and let go of it Crying or Very sad .

I was lucky really as it landed on grass so not much damage...
Did you find out why it was running rough ??...
Or is that's why you are doing the valves again ?...

I replaced a lifter the other day , I was well pissed off , had to set all the timing up ,, when I put a peg on the sprocket ( cam chain ) it had moved , so had to unbolt both camshafts to set all the timing.
Mad
Back running fine now though , its all fun of having a bike...

nothing worse than that feeling of knowing your bike is going down.

i remember doing something similar with my RC8, thought i'd put the stand down but hadnt. Feeling it go past the point of no return and using all your body strength to no avail. Luckily i managed to brace my bikes slow drop with my leg and it also had some of the uber crash bungs so sustained no damage at all.

i did my back in for a week though.

It's the worst feeling and the bike looks Soooo wrong when it's on it's side like that. I have engine guards so I suppose I should consider myself lucky that there wasn't more damage.

Michelle... Valves were still rattling a little too much so I tightened them down a bit more and they're good now.

The fix for my bike running rough though was removing the carbs and completely stripping them down and cleaning. Never done this before and I have to say it wasn't as painful as I expected.

Balanced them all up and it runs very smooth now so there must have been some dirt in there somewhere.

I've still got a knocking though which is why I set off on this journey of valves and carbs so back to square one really though the bike is running smoother than it was. The knock only occurs when the bike has warmed up and can only really be heard when stationary. I had a mechanic look at it yesterday and he got his stethoscope on it and concluded that the noise is coming from the clutch area so this weekend I might have look behind there and see if there's anything lose. He said if it was seroius engine trouble then it would be knocking even if cold.

We'll see... I do love this bike and I enjoy working on it but I'd prefer to be out riding it. Dropping it on Sunday nearly put the bike on Ebay lol.

I dropped a brand new bike, less than an hour old.

Bandit 650, we hates them.

I swear the earth actually moves appreciably up a bit when a Bandit leans over.

Crash bung/bars, do it. I know insurers don't like them because they can - ostensibly - banana frames and cat-B bikes, but on the other hand, how many claims do they never see at all because they've been fitted?

You would be the only one if you have not dropped your bike.

For some reason all bike droppings happen when you does not expect it Shocked

Go figure LOL.

I have seen worst though...when you drop your bike and your leg got caught under it Rolling Eyes

Yeh... I can Imagine it could get quite nasty if it falls on you.

I've got a huge bruse on my shin after my drop. I don't remember how it happened but it's been a few days now and it still painful.

All part of the fun I suppose.

Just had my new break leaver and indicator delivered so fitting them at the weekend. Not sure how to sort the scuff on the faring out though. It's pretty deep.
