I have pressed the button (quiet at the back) to launch a Trident Missile.

Yes, really.

During a tour of a Vanguard submarine which was in for a refit, we had the chain of command/protocols for launch of nuclear warheads explained to us. We got taken to a simulator for the launch process to be explained. The final stage is that someone actually has to hold the trigger (it's a converted revolver type handle thingy) and press it.

I was the one who got to hold the trigger, I paused for a moment imagining the person who may at some stage have to be in that position for real.

Then......I pressed it.

Nothing happened. I felt cheated.

The button (actually a trigger) works because your opponent fears you will push it, so you must be willing to push it. However if you do push it you have failed the mission.

Comrade Corbyn has said (in relation to the Trident question) that if he was prime minister he would not launch a nuclear weapon. So suggesting the interesting question "would you press the button?". Seriously man you guys at the back of the class need to catch up. 😁

No the question is, "would you press the button". Should we keep a nuclear weapon system is for another thread, which you could always start. Then of course there's the question should we keep Trident which is actually a different from wether we should or should have a nuclear deterrent but also a question regarding an wether we have an "independent" nuclear weapon system because (in case you don't know) Trident id actually controlled by the US.

No the question is, "would you press the button". Should we keep a nuclear weapon system is for another thread, which you could always start. Then of course there's the question should we keep Trident which is actually a different from wether we should or should have a nuclear deterrent but also a question regarding an wether we have an "independent" nuclear weapon system because (in case you don't know) Trident id actually controlled by the US.


All Trident missiles (delivery systems) are maintained, tested and overhauled by the Americans. We get our missiles from the same pool of weapons as the American submarines do. The warheads were/are made in Aldermaston and are ours.

The 'Americans control Trident' is to that extent only. We do not need their permission to fire them, a CND myth. It is down to the elected government of the UK God help us. Shocked

Indeed. Trident being American controlled is just a line from the CND playbook. The missiles are maintained by the US, but that's our choice as a cost saving measure. We did have maintenance in country under Polaris and we could do again if we wanted to spend the money. Even if the US cut support for Trident, MBDA could easily set up support facilities for the Trident missiles. It's not specific to Trident either, most weapons systems have supply or maintenance dependencies on other countries as it's not cost realistic or even cost efficient to be completely independent. If you have to expend all the R&D and only buy 50 units you're not doing yourself much of a favour when you could share the R&D and production cost and get 150 units instead [numbers just an example].

Trident is probably one of the UK's most independent weapons after 5.56mm ammo, grenades and that kind of thing. Not only that but the UK can produce more warheads whenever it wants. The limitation in numbers would be more down to delivery systems than the warheads.

I wouldn't want the responsibility of deciding.
I'm too temperamental. I tend to stay all buttoned up for ages and ages, and then I flip - often for no apparent reason other than What-The-Fuck-Everrrrrr.

So if I was in charge of it, I'd be like:

"Don't be silly, I wouldn't dream of pressing the button when there are diplomatic and other military methodologies that need to be explored. Now off you go and do your pompous-military-chapping elsewhere, I have an appointment to have my lashes re-fixed."

But every so often (but not "once a month") I'd get bent out of shape and be too tempted to just hit that fucker with a mallet and say "Fuck Yooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!"

... followed swiftly by Shocked "Owp!" Shocked

I could never launch a nuke.

If I were put in a serious position where it was my place to decide whether to do it, I'd just end up googling 'Hiroshima 1945' for the sake of properly getting to know what I'm going into.

I'd also watch the film Threads (1984), which is actually set in Sheffield so it all feels much closer to home.

And then I'd be deterred immediately.
