hi

having a chat tomorrow with a company about doing a bit in-between shifts in my real job…. partly for the cash as a topup, and partly as i don't seem to get out much so hoping to find some enjoyment in it!

I've registered as self employed and been quoted reasonably to change insurance. is there anything else legally i need to do?!

thanks

Good luck with that - sounds ideal doesn't it, like riding bikes, get paid for riding bikes; the reality can be dramatically different.

Talk to marmalade and sickpup about the realities of modern couriering, talk to the rest of us about our experiences of days gone by.

Yes, tried it many years ago, before the internet so there was plenty of work. I earnt a lot, came close to killing myself and hated it within a few months, quit within 6.

Long distance on the right bike nowadays may be OK but how anyone does London day in day out Shocked

Don't be rushed Don't be hurried
so try not to crash or kill your bike

Do lots of maintenance as you doing lots of miles

Again don't let the controller rush you

Did they give you any expectations about how much you'd earn? That's always where you get screwed. Find out how many drops you're likely to get, and your pay per drop, and how much they'll take out of your pay for the radio, bib, bag, etc. If you end up with a living wage you'll be in a small minority.

ok if you can get a regular long job every day, preferably evening

our best job was 9pm Birmingham to london then back up to nantwich and then home with some big cassette type computer tapes, paid £400+ plus a week back in 1987

and the other best bit was a large irish girl in the office, but I had to keep quiet about riding her

Get cold and wet lots. Dont get paid much, occcasionally run at a loss to keep the controller happy as otherwise you won't ever get the decent jobs. Your bike will break more often. The NHS are mainly arseholes to deal with.

Get to see some cool places though, I'd do it again...but not full time. Doesn't exactly make you right in the head getting two hours sleep at a time and having nobody to talk to for 90% of your day. The anti-social hours also make it a bit of a relationship/social life wrecker.

Full time expect to take home between £100 & £200 a week after fuel/tyres and other expenses.

So you were doing night jobs and still getting paid fuck all? It sounds like you were on call 24 hours a day!

365 days a year too. Spent christmas day delivering peoples new phones as part of a contract with Orange, and boxing day delivering replacement phones/iPads to the people that'd broken them on christmas day.

Needless to say, as the delivery boy it's totally 100% your fault that their smartphone/tablet has broken at christmas and they've lost their photo's.

Fuck, that must be a record for the worst paid job in the country. You should tell Jeremy Corbyn. Who was your employer?

Been to 2 companies. First the pay wasn't great but can top up with each job.... Assuming you gather jobs as you go.
2nd one sounds much better where it'll be a set price per run, smaller private firm with large customer contract. Id be the only bike so more likely to pick more jobs.

Done the insurance now, only looking to do a couple days a week so should cover the cost of that soon enough and have a few quid to pocket
