Hi there,

Passed my MOD 1 and MOD 2 DAS today, and it's time to upgrade the old YBR 125.

90% of my riding will be a 10 mile round trip commute from Clapham, to Central London. However I would also like to use the biyke for fun on longer journeys, and maybe even a trip to the continent eventually.

Bike will sadly be kept on the rode when parked at home, as no garage or driveway.

Budget is up to about £6k.

Pretty fixed on the MT 07 at the moment, seems to tick all the boxes, however would really like some advice on what else could be a good idea.

Thanks!

Kept out on the road, maybe you should think about spending a bit less.

How about a 2nd hand FZ6 S2? Decent first big bike and will do everything you want.

I agree with this - don't spend £6k on something unless it's chained and hidden. You can pick up a decent Suzuki bandit or something for a couple of grand as a first big bike.

Same situation as you except my Mod 2 is on Tuesday, but hopefully then I will be off to the garage shortly after to pickup my brand new CBR 650. I got it a month ago on the summer promotion, so got £500 off. Came in slightly over your budget at £6399.

For me it is the ideal first big bike - plenty powerful enough to have fun on (Did my Mod 1 training for three days on the CB650F which is the non faired version), but not a 600RR which I was toying with getting.

I live just down the road from you and the pikey menace is a concern, but what can you do? Guy I work with has a garage, but got his brand new CBR fireblade 15 plate lifted from work a few months back. If they want it, they will likely get it. Short of storing the bike in an underground bunker and never taking it out then there is always going to be a risk of theft.

I have however taken steps to minimise the risk. I have got a tracker fitted on the bike, it will have the Honda HISS ignition immobiliser, it will be chained to the lamppost outside my house with the 19mm Almax immobiliser chain and squire stronghold lock, and I will be taking it to get an alarm fitted in a few weeks time with tip sensor. I will also have a cover over the bike. If they get through all that and manage to locate and throw away the tracker, well what can you do!?

Think this may well depend on where you live, common sense on the OP's part. My bike is on my drive chained to a anchor point and covered but I'm in a area with low crime rate and a cul de sac dead end rd with nosey neighbours.

SuperMike is a mini teff and double post is annoying.

..

Outside storage is annoying. Outside OTR storage annoying and scary. All that plus London is like this. Would not want.

Gumtree.

There's currently plenty of winter hacks being sold for under £1,500 so your £6,000 wouldn't be all that dented and you'd get to be able to buy the best of the bunch, you will have to do a lot of retarded owner filtering though, probably the most unfortunate part about bike shopping is the "I now it all m8" owners and "I don't now anything so retarded description and potato photos m8" owners.

Then once you've got your decent first bike for under £2,000 (if you wanted to push the boat out) you could invest in one or multiple almax 16/19mm chains and a decent WP motorbike cover.

£4,000 at least saved.

If you've got £6,000 without selling your 125 then you could keep both and use the 125 for winter and commuting and then use your new bike for weekend trips and sunny days. Sounds ideal.

Consider insurance quotes before putting money down. I moved from urban pikeytown with "driveway" overnight insurance (locked in back garden behind token fence) to parking on a driveway beside my place in the sticks and my insurers threw a massive paddy. Some shopping around helped for I am over 30 and have a tatty old cruiser that is near zero theft risk, the MT-07, that's tasty.

Also, your first bike will be subject to noob mistakes. Don't make them on a brand new bike.

1) Get an old hack

2) Don't live or work in London. Other alternatives are available.

Sounds like you're doing everything right though. Best of luck.

After looking at the comments, and also contacting the insurers, it sounds like it could be out of the question for now!

Originally after looking at comparison sites, was expecting to pay just a few hundred £ extra for the insurance. However MCE seem to want to have a laugh.

They "can't" upgrade my policy to an MT07, or pretty much anything with a decent engine size. The only way they will do it is cancelling the current policy, and then taking out a new one with them.

Anyone else had this? Sounds like a joke.

Moving towards getting a slightly more fun cheap 125 (Grom), and waiting until the years NCB and more suitable storage are with me.

- High risk area (x10 worse because London OMGWAAARD).
- Dripping wet brand new first license.
- Limited years OTR.
- Any no claims? (if no then not surprising).

I can't say I've ever read of a policy not being able to be modified, sounds like system computes your to much of a risk and the equivalent of "cannot quote" on comparison sites.

I think we're making rash choices because the insurance monkeys pressed a few buttons and read what came up on the screen, lets use our brains here and just make clear that you have six thousound ponds to play with.

A good idea would be to visit a comparison website and get an idea of what a brand new policy would cost to take out.

If you have 0 no claims bonus then I'd advise waiting until your current policy has run out and you've gained that as combined with a brand new license it will make all the difference, I'm doing exactly this and the quotes go from £800-1000 / cannot quote to MCE quoting me a little over £300, 125'cc work out £20 cheaper than GS 500 (GS 500 being an example A2 bike for me).

So, visit a comparison website enter some details, play around with details to reduce cost and different combinations and let use now what quotes you get given.

It's common and many folk have been stung with it. It's down to the underwriters and their voodoo risk calculations, there's no way to force them to change cover.

I do try to mention it when folk talk about getting a 125 for a few months.

your insurer might do you a favour on cancellation fees and the like if you need a new policy. Devitt did for me when I moved and their red star policy wouldn't cover me, but another broker's red star policy would.

I think my insurance went £200 on first 125, £450 when I wrote that one off and hadn't sorted the claim before getting a new one. A "higher risk category" charge of £200 on top of that when I told my insurers I'd passed my test. Cancelled the next day and insured the 535 for under £400, my third year of ownership of it was back to £200, and £130 for a new policy when I moved to the sticks with a full pro-rata refund from devitt, who to their credit were proper honest.

I think somewhere along the line my Swinton brokered LV/highway policy asked for a 3) loading because a motad pipe weas a 'performance item'. Of course I had the bike booked in for new exhaust overnight as my insurance changed and 33bhp limit expired, so I told swinton to fuck off. Devitt and and Premier both told me that they didn't care about my motad pipe but the policy specified they may choose to replace it with an OEM pipe if I made a claim.

Insurance is nuts.

After many phone calls to the insurance, and many times of them trying to rip me off, I think I'll be staying on the 125 until I've got the years NCB.

Situation may change within the next year, meaning I won't be in London, so going to get a snazzier 125 to keep me going!

Thanks for the input.

^^^ This. And MT07 is highly overrated cheap bike. FZ6 is better bike IMO anyway.

Well since it is winter time I guess it is better to get a winter commuter as first bike. I'll have time to dream of a flashy bike. I think the cb/CBR 650 are better than people think.

I have a question and I don't want to open another thread. I have insured the little CBF for 6 months, can that timee be carried on to my ncb when I insure my first big bike? (Probably the most asqued question after the "A 97" license.)

I did my mod 1 on a cb650f, thought it seemed ok for the short bit of road riding I did on it (to test centre and back).

So went to ride a demonstrator cbr650f at honda, thought the cbr looked a lot nicer fully faired and what not. Really not a great bike, certainly wouldn't shell out £6-7k on one!

Was on a fazer 600 for my mod 2 training and test, far superior bike, although the bang upright riding position isn't really what i want or i'd buy one.
