Hi all,

Just brought myself a CG125, 1989 BR model. Ive had one before and they are great.

The bike is generally in good condition, it starts first kick, has power and gear selection is easy.

However, there is a scrapping noise from the engine area at speeds between 35-50mph. It happens both while under power and deccelerating and occassionally when slowing it will carry on making the noise down to 20mph. The clutch is quite near the end of its travel and i think needs replacing, however im unsure of why the noise isnt predictable with all clutch use i.e. 1st and 2nd at lower speeds.

So it makes me think its something else.

Thanks in advance

Could be almost anything.

Does it do it while it's in neutral?

Does it do it while the bike's on the centre stand, in gear, with the rear wheel spinning?

Or does it only do it while the front wheel is turning?

Sorry we can't be more help. Given that it's a CG, it's not going to be that expensive, when you figure it out.

Get up to speed. Does it make this sound?

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice, didnt get a chance to take the bike out yesterday, i had to be in the house for various reasons.

However, i have a bit of mechanical knowledge so i took the RH cover off, exposing the clutch. Only thing i noticed was play in the clutch plates, within the outercover.

In terms of rotation there was a little, which i guess is normal
But wiggling the plates up and down (like checking for play in a wheel) also produced quite a bit of movement. is this also normal?

I dont believe its the chain or chain guard. I guess it could be the rear tyre not being aligned but it really doesnt look out.

Taking it for a spin today for sure so will try what has been suggested.

Thanks all

Hi All,

Took the bike out yesterday,

The noise began in 5th at around 50mph. It seems to be related to temperature of the engine since it only made the noise returning, not going to my friends, when i stopped a few times.

1) The noise started so i turned the engine off - noise carried on
2) Put it into netural - noise went as soon as i changed into 4th gear
3) Pulling in the clutch did nothing, it was the gear change that stopped it.

All the above was done while rolling, by the time i had finished No.3 i would have been doing around 40mph

Thanks

You've jumped to stage 2/3 before doing the simple stuff.

First things first, Check the chain tension and check the wheel bearings.

Your quite right, I had a look at the chain tension, it has about an inch of movement up and down which as far as i can remember is ok.

Both wheel bearings appear to be ok in terms of sound and play.

What is the tension like when you sit on it?
