Hello I am selling a bike for the first time. Am i right in understanding that legally all I need to do is send off the V5C document with the buyers name and address?

Do it online, get an acknowledgement, shred it.

Name and address.

The DVLA computer has a nap evening and weekends, but I'd still far rather do it online on Monday than post off the V5C in the hope that it'll be received and processed.

yeah i agree its much better to do it online. I am selling my automatic scooter buying a geared 125 I have passed my theory now time for module 1 and 2

In addition to that, buying or selling privately I always make out a couple of copies of a receipt. Just yours and buyers/sellers name and address, the bike make/model/reg/mileage, price paid, "private sale, sold as seen", date & time (so no arguments about who triggered a camera that day, protection for both of you), and signatures from both of you on both copies.

You don't legally need to do so, but it may be of some (limited) use if there are problems later.
