Out for a merrily ride on the gsxr in the suffolk countryside. Thought I'd stop offor in Orford for 10 minutes before heading home (which is about 20 minutes away) for a wee and a vape.

Stopped in the gravel car park, hit the kill switch and vape away whilst checking messages on my phone. Sort my ear phones out, stick my gloves and lid on and hit the starter.

Bollocks. Battery is all but dead.

Stick it in first and push the bike to the very slightly higher end of the car park whilst slipping constantly in my worn out 10 year old alpinstars. At the point I realised how much harder it is to push whilst in gear with the clutch in. One attempt at bumping the bike failed with just the rear wheel sliding on the stones.

So now I'm sitting here on the floor admiring the view before I attempt again or get the woman to come pick me and the battery up before to give it a bit of a charge at home.

On the plus side I bought 2 scratch cards and a lucky dip for the euro millions last night and won on all 3! Great! Shame my profit was a whopping £5.80 combined

Bump in 2nd or even 3rd, 1st tries to spin the engine too fast/hard and the tyre just locks up.

There is a good reason why you should never turn a bike off with the kill switch ... OP has just discovered it. Kill switch only disconnects the LT side of the ignition, everything else carries on merrily consuming the battery's reserve.

Have you tried working the kill switch back and forth a few times? They can be a bit temperamental as they tend not to be used much.

It's fine. It attempts to start for half a second then just get clicking with dash fading etc. Woman has finally replied so should be on her way shortly.

Annoyingly I don't even have leads myself


After leaving it for a while it was pretty close to starting but the battery used its juice up just before I burst in to life.

Home now. Simply couldn't be bothered to push it 250 meters to the road.

Battery is on charge, got to go out to pick someone up in an hour 5 minutes from where the bike is. Hopefully an hour is enough to get the bike started.

I asked a chap to give me a push whilst on the bike but it still wouldn't bump.

Bikes back home safe and sound after an hours charge.

The battery has drained once before due to me setting the alarm and not using it in 2 or 3 weeks.

I won't be leaving the ignition on again though even for a minute

Thanks scaredycat, wasn't a big issue this time and I do have breakdown cover which could have come and jumped started me but I'd guess it would take them an age to get to the nether regions of the east coast.

At least it was 15 minutes from home and not where I had planned on going today (hunstanton). Off to buy more scratch cards, lottery and much alcohol to get the woman drunk for some bum fun.

I never use the kill switch, always turn the bike off by the key.

Kill switch is for emergencies.

Must admit I never touch the killswitch (unless it's at a junction and I spend the next 20 minutes taking panels off sweating like a pikey's pony only to realise that yes, I'm a daft cunt)

Key can be a bit fiddly to turn and is often a wiggle and jiggle rather than the kill switch I can hit without taking my hand from the bars. If I turn the key that also means I need to un immobilise the bike again to start it which is an extra 7 seconds of my life.

I use the killswitch when waiting at a level crossing for a while - which happens roughly every other day. That way I can leave my lights on (though I drop to sidelights to save power) and keep my starcom powered up so I can still have music and/or radio comms running. It can be a five minute wait at that crossing, it's nicer without the engine going.
