Insurance question

When part ex'ing a motorcycle, is it legal to ride it home before sorting out the insurance details? My current insurance includes "riding other bikes" and I want to know how this relates to changing bikes. Wouldnt want to come a cropper for not having the correct cover.

Im not sure if and when I will change my bike so its impossible to inform my insurer in advance. That, and I need to get comparisons from other insurances should my current insurer charge me stupid amounts for a changeover.

No. As soon as it belongs to you it's specifically excluded on the riding other bikes extension

Fees either way.

If you cancel your current policy you'll pay for it. In the past when in similar situation I've opted to stay with existing provider as fees considered I wasn't making a huge loss for the remainder of the policy.

Regarding the cover, when you know when you will be picking up the bike let your insurer know date/time and bike details and they'll do the switch automatically.

But it will not be recorded as yours until the previous owner sends off the V5 and it's all been updated. You could just be out on a "test ride".

If the previous owner still has it insured and that shows on the database along with MOT & tax I would ride it home.

Your choice though.

Worst comes to worst take out a policy online the day you purchase ensuring that the cancellation fees inside the 14 day period are as reasonable as you can find, ie a score. Ride bike home and cancel under cooling off. You'll have to pay up front and wait for return premium of course but it's better than 6 points and a two hundred quid fine.

With that said you could just check MID the day you pick it up - as long as it's showing as YES then the chances of getting stopped without doing anything silly are practically zero anyway as you'll not trig an ANPR hit. Not that I'd recommend that of course

I had temporary insurance on my car but don't know if this applies to motorbikes.

What happened was I wanted to drive a car I'd bought back home and there was free 'temporary' insurance. The dealer told me about it and it covered me for a few days.

The quote was literally something like £10 grand TPFT if I'd wanted to take them up on it and when I cancelled the policy, literally the next day, the insurers asked me why...

Worth checking if temp cover exists for motorbikes as well because you can get covered for a few days.

I know about the online change of keeper, but I wonder how many sellers do, or are willing to use it. Could always ask them to do it later on after you are home.

I plan on buying new. Dont trust 2nd hand bikes due to potential reliability issues. Guess I will have to call my insurer on the day or somethin. Its kind of annoying that insurance wont cover you to ride a new vehicle home.

If it's new you may get a bit of free cover from the dealer. Worth an ask

New? They're not going to let you ride it away without registering it and putting VED on it. Strictly speaking you don't absolutely have to have insurance in place for that any more, but good luck persuading them that it's your problem unless you turn up with a van or trailer.
