I had a quick search online but couldn't see anything that gave a definitive answer.
My question is, is it illegal to brim a fuel tank to the point that it might start spilling out on the road? or would taxi companies take a dim view of it?
The reason i ask is i watched a taxi driver tonight brimming his tank with diesel, when the fuel nozzle began cutting off he then started shaking the taxi side to side and managed to get about another 10p in the tank, I assume this is why we have so much diesel on the roads?

Highway Code

"Petrol stations/fuel tank/fuel leaks. Ensure that, when filling up your vehicle’s tank or any fuel cans you are carrying, you do not spill fuel on the forecourt. Any spilled fuel should be immediately reported to the petrol station attendant. Diesel spillage is dangerous to other road users, particularly motorcyclists, as it will significantly reduce the level of grip between the tyres and road surface. Double-check for fuel leaks and make sure that

you do not overfill your fuel tank
the fuel cap is fastened securely
the seal in the cap is not torn, perished or missing
there is no visual damage to the cap or the fuel tank"

That is the 'advice' but I know for fact not all the Police know the rules and actually have their own idea of the rules and the law.

It is not something the po po would chase unless the person made a big mess and the ocifer had an urge to do his public duty.
Some might chin the cnut but maybe not report it or woteva.

You could try searching for case law on it. Smile

I don't brim my tanks but I do fill to near the top. I'm too stingy to risk spilling. (Tight Fisted Scottish Git Embarassed )

Is there something of a 'want' with you?

Do you know you are stalking me?

Define in legal terms "might"? You assume too much.

The reason why we have so much diesel on the roads is Ford. Good luck with changing that:

Ford wrote:
The following steps for re-fuelling the fuel tank should be explained to the customer:

1. Insert the filling station nozzle so far that the first notch of the filling station nozzle can be hooked into the capless system cover. The filling station nozzle should not be inserted any further either. Likewise in case of filling the car at the roadside with a jerry-can the funnel needs to be inserted until the ring of the funnel rests behind the cover.

If the customer experiences difficulties at some filling stations it helps to drop the filling station nozzle until it rests on the fuel filler pipe cover.
- Re-fuel the fuel tank (automatic cut-off or manual handling)
- Do not change position of the fuel pump nozzle during refilling. The fuel flow will be interrupted prematurely.
It is recommended to refuel the fuel tank until the first automatic shut off of the filling station nozzle.
A further refuelling until the next automatic shut off could lead to fuel dripping from the fuel tank overflow pipe to the ground.
After fuelling the filling station nozzle should remain for 10 sec. to allow a remaining quantity of fuel to flow into the fuel tank. Otherwise this quantity of fuel will be drained via the fuel tank overflow pipe to the ground.

Engine oil will do as much harm as fuel. Poorly maintained shit heaps can pour tons of oil in the road.

Look at car parks where the same arse parks his scrapheap everyday. The back shadow. Smile

My Subaru had a built in feature to stop that....

It used to leak oil onto the headers, whereupon the oil would be burnt off, saving the road from getting oily and filling the cabin with the smell of burning oil

The cabby might have got another 10p worth in but that doesn't make the tank full. The filler tube probably projects into the tank somewhat making it impossible to remove all the air. You need that air gap to allow for expansion.

That 10p extra is very unlikely to spill out of the cap. Modern cars have a small lever near the filler cap which vents the large expansion space in the top of the tank when the cap is replaced, allowing the fuel to drop down into the tank.

It is possible to get another 8-10l into a full tank by filling up until it clicks, pressing the lever with the nozzle so the fuel drops down the filler neck (filling the expansion space) and repeating fuelling. Just as well our taxi driver doesn't know that. Rolling Eyes

This is also very irresponsible and only twats do it etc.

Well, somebody has figured out how. The roads this morning were more fabulously polychromatic than a gay pride march.

Re. the issue raised near the top of the thread, sadly there's no effective sanction that can be used against obnoxious OCD tosspieces.

From what I've witnessed the flatbed trucks used for Highways works and the like are the biggest offenders. I've seen them brim it and pour diesel all over the Shell forecourt a few times. When I told the attendant about the rivers of Diesel he shrugged and told me it's like that every Monday morning when they all descend and fill up for the week...
