Dropped the NC750X

So, jumped on the NC750 to ride into town a few days ago, and about 1/3 of a mile from my house is a tight right hand bend. Taking this at 25mph on the MSX isn't a problem in the dry, so took it on the NC at the same speed.

Unfortunately, the NC had new tyres about 200 miles ago, and still had some chunky chicken strips. As soon as I leant right over, on the cold tyres, it just slipped from under me, and dumped me in the middle of the road.

It then carried on until it twatted into the curb, and managed to make quite a mess of itself. I suspect most of the damage came from when it twatted the curb, not from dropping it 1/4 of a second earlier/

Front wheel is buckled, handlebars bent, possible bent forks, levers, mirrors, plastics, silencer. Bits alone come to over £1500, so I've had to go via the insurance.

You can see on the back wheel where the tyre slipped when the new tyre goop failed to grip

What are those tyres anyway?

I have Metzeler Interact Z8 on mine and they're not bad at all. Sometimes they squirrel about on white paintwork, but generally hold well.

There's a bridge on my way to work , immediately after you have to turn about 80 degrees, where there's a drain waiting for you. The other day, in the rain, I was twatting about with my visor and not paying attention, got over the bridge, going round the corner to find a car stopped. I'm leant over so fully expect to go down when I use the front to stop me. Tyres did a cracking job, no crash. Hero delusion + stool cory..

I've got no idea what the goop/release agent/anti-go-off-coating is, but I do know that the road surface was good, and I wasn't leaning over that far.

You can clearly see from the marks on the tyre that it gave way at the point where I started to use the part of the tyre that is a different colour to the main centre section, on part of the tyre that hadn't been used before

Tyre is a pirelli scorpion, replaced under warranty when the original dunlops wore out after only 1800 miles.

Recentley got m7rr's on my bike, good road is about 8 miles from where I live. Got the bike all the way over on my first run with no issues. You are allways going to have a bit of new tyre untill you use it, as long as its hot it has allways been okay for me. Track day I did a while ago a bloke had brand new 211's on (hypersport road tyre like the supercorsa sp) and was fine after a lap.

Scorpion are Trail/Enduro tyres right? Get rid and put some PR3s on there instead.

This whole "release agent thing" is a bit of a myth, at least as far as Pirelli is concerned. Stole this from another forum where a guy asked the manufacturers:

"Pirelli does not use mold release. Tires are shiny because the general buying public demands that visually a tire look cool, smooth, shiny, and new when they shop for tires in the rack at the dealer. We rely on the smoothness of the mold to get this appearance and to help the tire let go from the mold during production."

Tyre moulds are coated internally with Teflon so that the rubber releases easily.

If there was any coating it should have been worn off well before 200 miles.
Seems more plausible there was some spillage of oil or diesel, maybe sandy gravel from recent heavy rain.

In about 1982 I did have a rear tyre fitted which almost spat me off 50 yards from where it was put on.
10 miles later it seemed fine.

Next thing to consider is that you can use the tyre all the way to the edge, I've been out on brand new tyres in sub 5 degree temp and had knee down on roundabout in 15 miles or so, you wont fall off.

Now look at your tyre, look at how long that scuff mark is, if you were riding at the time and it slipped out on the non existent release agent, then there would be one single small scuff where the tyre slipped, bear in mind the contact patch of a car tyre is a credit card, for nanoseconds, how did you get a scuff that long? I would say that scuff is from when your bike went down the road by itself and the tyre scuffed along the floor as it span around, it explains the length of the scuff, and that the scuff is all over the place height wise on the tyre, as the bike would have rocked as the tyre hit the ground as it slid down the road.


It seems like poor obs to me, you didn't observe something on the road and then slide it out, that said it is more than likely one of those things where you just don't know what happen but you forgot how to bike

So the bike got picked up by the insurance co 3 weeks ago, and take from Newcastle to Surrey! to be repaired. Got a call on Monday to say that they are going to proceed with the repair, and I can expect it back in the 3rd week of November.

Good job I didn't need it to get to work and back

Has it gone to 4th Dimension by any chance ?? If so prepare for a long wait, and check it over with a fine tooth comb when you get it back!!

Yes I timed it very badly when I crashed mine (June)!!!! Bought a little Bandit 400 to keep me occupied while I waited.

Took 9 weeks delivery + two weeks for them to send out spare parts for damage that they overlooked and I ended up repairing myself.

They might be a bit quicker with you this time of year
