location is partly irrelevant, wondering what people do in this situation:

The road is wide enough to happily take two lorries heading in opposite directions without much trouble but has a pinch point narrowing it to single lane in the middle of the road, my priority or 'right of way'

after the pinch point on the right hand side are some parked cars and a gentle right hand bend.

Tonight as I approached the pinch point at about 25mph two cars came through with enough time before I reached the pinch point, they were then followed by another car chancing it with 4 more cars bumper to bumper behind him, none of whom could actually see if there was any space for them to come through, then a small gap which I started to move into and a final car squeezing through who, having to slow right down to manoeuvre around me shouted about it being his right of way.

so, in this situation do you just wait for people to stop being stupid / a gap in traffic / someone actually reading the signs?

I do whatever is nessacary to not get knocked off by blind / stupid / ignorant drivers, even if it means giving way, and I try very hard not to get annoyed. Life's too short to argue over 11 feet of road, no point making it shorter

There is a shortage of reason on UK roads.

Either get off and do Wony Pikawin on his arse or suck it up.

I don't consider 'right of way' unless I am in my NATO Surplus Vehicle.

As val said size matters, the good ol,playground mentality of I'm bigger than you therefore I have right of way. I love it when someone in a nice new Range Rover tries it and I'm in my old van. See the look on their faces when I drive straight for them, then stop and turn my engine off and wait for them to reverse. (Childish I know but they piss me off when they do it) on my bike I just pull over and wait for them to go through.

If they have good visibility, surface is good, and there is a bit of room closer to the single car bit, I'll quite often make a point of not moving over until as late as I can safely push it, just to be an arse basically.

Like others have said though, it isn't worth having a head-on over, so when it comes down to it you pretty much have to let them through.

The cars following through is different, you get the same with cars pulling around a bus, they don't wait to see that it's clear they just blindly follow through the gap. Morons.

Sometimes the contractor puts the round sign upside down giving the false impression that both sides have the right of way. When I put them in I make sure the sign man has a big crayon drawing showing the right way up.

You are riding a motorcycle, which nobody who could afford a car would do. You are therefore poor

Is good when they try it when you're driving a van. Handbrake on, engine off, arms crossed. Refuse to make eye contact.

But then, I make people stop on zebra crossings who saw me styart to cross and had no intention of doing so too. Claim the crossing, hard stare and looking large enough to make a fair sized dent in their car generally does it.

Mrs stinkwheel was horrified last time I did it, my comment was I'm ready to jump onto the bonnet and I'll make sure the windscreen gets broken.

On a motorbike, I'm under no illusion. There are idiots out there who will kill me because they don't even see me as a threat to their paintwork. I was hit head on around the outer circle at Regents Park by an idiot who was on the wrong side of the road. I had a guy drive straight at me, the wrong way down a one-way street who then started shouting.

I just observe with mild amusement. They are idiots and I let them go. I have bigger things to worry about.

after 15 years of driving and 3 years on bikes I was just bemused by the situation, usually people round that area are quite considerate drivers

Some of the traffic-calming wotsits round my way have bicycle bypass lanes down the left. You can fit a motorbike through these.

Maybe you should write to your MP claiming you were almost knocked off your bicycle at the pinch point, and to think of the children who almost saw your balls through the torn lycra as you lay in a heap in the road and you demand such a lane so that this never happens. Thumbs Up

Are you talking about the road in Prestwich village to Whitefield Tesco?

It's a 4 lane road 2 lanes either way. However for some reason the cars all bunch up and drive down the middle of the road turning it into a 2 lane road.

It is most annoying, but that is what filtering is for.

Reminds me of a report/blog someone living in Thigh-land years ago wrote.
It documented for the un-witted how they drive in Thailand.
Basically it stated:

'In Thailand, No Fucker Gives way to any other fucker.

Big Flash Car has right of way.
Big heavy vehicle has right of way.
Man on Elephant has right of way.
Never give eye-contact. That is a sign of weakness.
Even though there are only two lanes marked on the road Thai drivers will make more.'

People drive like cunts for one main reason. There is practically no chance of being brought to book for it.
The only time is is reported is after an incident.
Or when the constantly being reduced police system reports it.

The car protects arseholes from most harmful stuff (like a hard slap around the chops)
Because of this some take their liberties.

I find most other road users are very considerate and most folk enjoy driving in civilised environments.

I have lived in some dodgy countries and can say the UK roads are some of the easiest roads to drive on. Only because most of society is 'still' sociable.

Fiamm 2 tone horns are essential for persuading car drivers that you have the same rights as them. If you keep the button pressed for several seconds you can see their body language change as they finally twig that you are riding an actual vehicle.
