from memory the speedo drive unit is on the RHS of the front wheel ?

Again from memory the speedo drive unit has a worm gear that actually drives the cable, a small shaft with a slot, that the "blade" of the speedo cable fits into.

The worm is driven by a gear, which is drive by a "dog plate", which in turn is driven by the wheel hub.

The dog plate is a circular plate that had 2 external teeth which engage in 2 slots in the wheel hub.

the dog plate has 2 internal teeth that engage in 2 slots in the drive gear.

poor wheel fitting can bend the dog plate, meaning no drive.

remove the speedo cable from the drive unit, see the worn "blade", does this turn when the wheel is turned ??

if no then problem inside the drive unit.

if yes, is speedo cable broken ?

if no, then problem with the speedo instrument....... :karma:

Curious to know how you came to the conclusion that it could be either the drive unit or the cable.

OP states 'it does not measure speed, just km I have run it'

If the odometer is working then the problem is at the speedo (edited for clarity) end, sounds like you were unlucky enough to get a dodgy second unit. Presumably this is a cable drive affair and not electronically driven?

If the odometer is working the unit is getting drive, you have two routes to go. Learn how the speedo works and fiddle with it with very little screwdrivers etc. Or buy a second hand unit off Ebay.
